Martin Street Church of Christ: A Pillar of Faith And Service In Water Valley Since The 1950s
WATER VALLEY – For over seven decades, the Martin Street Church of Christ has been a cornerstone of faith, community, and service in Water Valley. Established in the early 1950s, this congregation has touched countless lives through its dedication to spiritual growth and outreach. With its small but tight-knit membership of 75 people, the church continues to play a vital role in the community as it embarks on an exciting new chapter in its history—a brand-new building project to meet the needs of its members and future generations.
The church, located at 521 Martin Street, is currently under construction, as the congregation works to raise a new edifice that will provide more space and better facilities for worship, fellowship, and community activities. This new construction comes as a response to both practical needs and a vision for expanding the church’s outreach.
Brother Dexter Ross, who has faithfully served as the minister for the past 12 years, expressed his excitement for the future of the congregation.
“This new building is not just about bricks and mortar,” said Ross. “It’s about creating a space where we can continue to be a beacon of hope and love in this community. We may be a small congregation, but our heart for service and our commitment to living out Christ’s teachings are as strong as ever; therefore, we reach out to all in need of that spiritual home that scripturally fulfills all of your needs.”
Since its founding, the Martin Street Church of Christ has maintained a reputation for its active involvement in local outreach. From food drives to supporting local schools and providing assistance to those in need, the church has long been a steadfast supporter of the Water Valley community. Many longtime residents of the area can recall growing up with the church as a constant presence, offering spiritual guidance and tangible help.
One member, Sister Lula Mae Turner, has been part of the congregation for over 40 years. She remembers the early days of the church and the sense of family that has always been central to its mission.
“We’ve seen a lot of changes over the years, but one thing has remained the same – our dedication to each other and to this community,” she said. “Brother Ross has been such a blessing to us, and we’re excited to see where God is leading us in this new phase.”
Under Brother Ross’ leadership, the church has not only maintained its traditional values but has also adapted to modern times: nightly virtual devotion on Facebook (called the Midnight Snack – 9 p.m. and virtual Prayer Service called the Tuesday Prayer Power Hour – 6 p.m.).
The new building project, which has been in the planning stages for several years, is seen as a necessary step to ensure that the church continues to thrive. While the congregation eagerly anticipates the completion of their new edifice, worship services and other activities continue as usual at the Fountain Square at 9 a.m. Sunday morning.
Community and business leaders such as Liz Reynolds have been instrumental in assisting the church during the construction of their building by offering help and resources. The church remains committed to serving Water Valley with love, humility, and a deep sense of purpose. As the construction moves forward, the congregation is hopeful that the new building will be a space where they can welcome more families, grow in their faith, and continue their long-standing tradition of community service.
The invitation to worship with the church, personal bible study sessions and community outreach is pivotal for Water Valley Community and the 5.2.1. family welcomes all to hear and obey the gospel to be added to the “blood bought institution” that is the Church of Christ.
With Brother Dexter Ross at the helm, the future looks bright for the Martin Street Church of Christ (affectionately called the 5.2.1. family), as they remain a pillar of faith in Water Valley for generations to come.
The Martin Street family welcomes private/love offering donations to the church as they embark on moving into the new worship facility. Donations can be made at Bank First in the name of the Martin Street Church of Christ.
