WATER VALLEY – Next month’s General Election on November 5 will be a big day as voters across the country will decide which presidential nominee – current Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump – will serve as the next president. The ballot also includes four independent candidates seeking the office of president along with candidates representing the Green Party, Constitution Party and Libertarian Party. Also on the ballot are contested races for a U.S. Senate seat and the 2nd Congressional District Representative seat.
Monday, Oct. 7 is the deadline for new voters to register to cast a ballot in the November election. The Circuit Clerk’s offices in the courthouses in Water Valley and Coffeeville will also be open from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Oct. 5, for voter registration in accordance with state law. Circuit Clerk Daryl Burney urges voters who have moved and not updated their new address to stop by the circuit clerk’s office.
“Remember, if you vote in a district that you do not live in, your vote could be challenged and not counted. You must vote in the district you reside in,” Burney reported.
Burney also reported absentee voting has started. In Mississippi, registered voters are eligible to vote absentee based on age, health or work demands, or their affiliation with the U.S. Armed Forces. For example, voters who will be outside the county on election day are entitled to vote by absentee ballot.
Both courthouses will also be open until noon for absentee voting the last two Saturdays before the election (Oct. 26 and Nov. 2). The deadline to cast an in-person absentee ballot is Saturday, Nov. 2.
Burney said voters can check the address they are registered at by calling or stopping by the circuit clerk’s offices in the Water Valley (662-473-1341) or Coffeeville (662-675-8187) courthouses. Voters can also go to the Mississippi Secretary of State (SOS) website and follow a few instructions to check on your status.
To check online at the SOS website, go to https://www. sos.ms.gov/ and click on “Elections and Voting.” Then select “Y’all Vote” and click on “Voter Registration Verification.”
