Welcome back to Inside the Blue and White! It’s been a busy week again in the Valley. The second-year law and public safety students completed their Homeland Security certification in Overland Search and Rescue. The students had to navigate from a starting point in the woods, to three separate points, and back to the starting point using a compass and grid reader. The school district thanks the Water Valley Fire Department for their help in ensuring the students’ safety while completing this task.
Our agriculture class helped to put out 80 bags of mulch in front of the high school.
Mrs. Pamela Redwine from the MSU Extension came to speak to Health Science 2 students to discuss the aging process as well as how to care for someone with sensory issues.
The class of 2025 started out last week by preparing for the election. Seniors partnered with research polls and past elections, in order to guess how the election would turn out. Coach Michael Howland promised that if any group guessed the electoral votes correctly, they could be exempt from our final project in the government class.

Water Valley Fire Chief Mark McGavock assisted students in the Law and Public Safety class obtain Homeland Security certification in Overland Search and Rescue.
On Tuesday morning Coach Howland ran a mock vote for all of his classes. As a first time voter, I feel that Coach Howland did a really good job of preparing us for the real deal. It was very similar to the real process of voting, with having to show him our ID as well as getting a copy of the real ballot to fill out, before he announced who would’ve won the election based on our votes.
Senior football player Donalvin “Dee” Wilson had a big day on Wednesday! He gathered with family, friends, and coaches to share the news of his commitment to play football at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. With a lot of offers, this was a big decision for Donalvin.
“I chose MGCCC because I’m looking to get out of my comfort zone and live in a new environment,” Dee said about his decision.
On Friday, we of course celebrated the first round of playoffs! Cheer, football, and band put on a pep rally at the elementary school. Coach Faust gave all the students a pep talk, encouraging everyone to show out for Friday night’s game! Devil dolls performed, we played games with teachers and students alike, and the cheerleaders who are competing this season even got to perform our competition routine during the pep rally!
Speaking of competition, the cheer squad takes the floor this Sunday, Nov. 17, in Jackson. Keep an eye out on the cheerleading team’s Facebook and Instagram pages for how to watch! We have worked so hard on this routine and can’t wait to show it off on the competition floor.
Going back to football, the Blue Devils faced the Leflore County Tigers in a home playoffs match. While the boys fought hard, they unfortunately fell to the Tigers, 6-36, and the 2024 football season came to an end.
Cheer has been a part of my life for eight years, so it hasn’t quite set in that there are no more Friday night football games for me to be a part of. I have mixed feelings on the end of the season, and I feel both relieved and upset.
Basketball season is kicking off! The varsity boys played Saturday at Independence, losing 57-61 against Hernando. I asked junior player Levi Bryant how he thinks the season will go.
“If we keep solid energy throughout the whole game, every game, I believe we will do pretty well, but if we cannot manage that, I don’t know if we’ll be able to manage a lot of wins this season,” Bryant said.
It is starting to slow down for the semester here in the halls of WVHS, but there is plenty more action to come this school year!
