We are starting to slow down for the semester at WVHS, but teachers, staff, and students alike are dedicated to ending 2024 on a good note!
Softball is gearing up for their busy season after the holidays and break. I talked to senior team member and captain Belle Belcher about the upcoming season.
“I feel like we will perform really well this season. I’m thrilled to spend my last year with such a promising bunch,” Belcher told me. She continued on, discussing the changes that have happened since last season with the coaches.

Aaliyah Scott gets ready to take the court after recognition night for eighth grade basketball players.
“Coach Michael Howland has been a very supportive coach thus far. The whole staff has put a lot of work into our practices leading up to the season, and the whole team is very excited to have such a dedicated coaching group.”
The Water Valley basketball teams have definitely been putting in strong effort this season. On Monday night, our junior high teams took on Pope at home and it was “Greek Night.” Basketball is a fan favorite in the Valley, and that is definitely due to the fun themes and high energy games!
The high school teams played at Charleston on Wednesday evening and varsity boys took the win, 49-38 WV. Then, WVJH played at home once again Thursday night. It was eighth grade recognition night, where they recognized eighth grade players who will be moving up to new teams next season! Water Valley emerged victorious for both games!
Our student council has been hard at work preparing for their annual Christmas theme days. Over the month of December, we try our best to spread holiday cheer in the halls of WVHS! Our theme for this year is “Christmas Poems,” with each day correlating to a specific holiday poem.
These poems are read aloud to everyone each morning before classes start. Mrs. Anna Smith helps us come up with unique and different ideas every year!
We also have an ongoing game of “Where’s Waldo?” going! Every day during the announcements, a clue is read to the entire student body about where Waldo is hiding. The first student to retrieve him earns a prize.
Last week, our first theme day was Wednesday. Students received ornament kits as they walked onto campus for them to make and hang around school. On Thursday, cardboard wreaths were handed out for a little friendly competition among first period classes! Each class will decorate their wreath and the students from all the winning classes will win a prize. Of course, the winning teachers and students also get bragging rights.
Friday was a bit of a student council tradition, with a special guest making a trip to WVHS. Santa Claus came to take pictures with all of our students before school on Friday morning. This is something the student council has coordinated the past few years, and it has always been a hit. We have all sorts of fun days coming up that I can’t wait for everyone to enjoy – there is nothing like having a bit of fun before break!
The yearbook staff is wrapping up their work for the first semester. We set a goal for all of our fall pages to be completed Friday. A few adjustments need to be made, and we are waiting on a few extra pictures, but I am so proud of how it is looking so far.
Roughly 60 percent of our annual staff members are new this year, but they have been learning so fast and working so diligently. I’m really proud of each and every one of them for stepping up to the challenge, and learning how to do something new! I love our theme this year, and can’t wait for the final product to all come together in May!
While the days pass slowly leading up to the break, I am trying to appreciate every minute before my last semester of high school begins! I hope to be able to share all the action over the next few weeks.
