We are back inside the halls of Water Valley High School! After a long two weeks of winter break, it felt good to be back to a regular schedule. While we did return to school, last week wasn’t quite normal. Students were off Monday because teachers had a professional development day. Tuesday saw the return of students to class and with this came some confusion and chaos, as it usually does.
A few students had some schedule changes, and Wednesday is when classes really resumed with lessons. It felt nice to get back to a regular day, with school and work. The highlight of many people’s school week would have to have been Thursday afternoon. Right before school let out, it was announced that we would not have school on Friday! Snow days aren’t very common in Mississippi, so it is, without a doubt, always a big affair at Water Valley High School. I personally was very tired after adjusting back to my normal wake-up time, so I was excited to get a chance to sleep in.

Our snow day wasn’t quite as snowy as I think most of us were hoping for. The rain left lots of the snow with a slushy texture, melting rather fast. Students still managed to enjoy their day off though! Many students, like freshman Robert Webb, enjoyed the day to stay in and catch up on sleep. I hung out with friends and family, and spent a little time outside but mostly binge watched TV.
I’m definitely not the biggest fan of the cold!
Many people spent the day hanging out with friends and enjoying just enjoying a day off school.
Now let’s talk sports for last week. Our basketball teams had another big face-off at Coffeeville! After an action-packed game at home last month, the teams had big expectations to meet. The junior varsity boys and the varsity girls teams had a successful day, defeating the Pirates again in their second match-up of the season. The varsity boys, though they fought hard, suffered an unfortunate loss against Coffeeville in a 72-32 game.
The basketball and girls powerlifting also competed Thursday night! Both varsity basketball teams faced off against North Panola in Sardis. Both games were hard fought, but the girls and boys all fell short. The girls lost their game 55-10, while the boys lost 70-52.
Powerlifting had a bit more luck at their meet, placing second overall in Ripley. I talked to senior lifter Mallory Tidwell about the upcoming season.
“It’s been different so far, with new coaches and all. However, (Coach Clint) Faust is doing a really good job getting us ready for meets and helping us reach new goals for the season. It’s definitely a different style of coaching though. I think that comes with having a change in coaches,” Tidwell told me. “My biggest hope for this year is that we have a successful season. I hope it is filled with personal growth, and I hope that my teammates are able to reach the goals they have set for themselves. I want to enjoy my senior season as much as possible!”
WVHS Cheer is doing something new and different this year – mascot tryouts! After this past season, many students have shown interest in being Big Blue. So, going along with cheer tryouts this year, any interested participants in 10th-12th grade can attend cheer clinic and tryouts!
There will be a mandatory parent interest meeting on January 21, and the cheer clinic will be February 3-5 in the D.E.S. gym. Tryouts will be on February 6 in the D.E.S. gym, starting at 4 p.m. I encourage anyone interested in cheer OR being the mascot to come check it out! We have so much coming up in the next few weeks, and I can’t wait to write all about it!
