Jan. 31 Is Deadline For Candidates To Qualify For City Elections

WATER VALLEY – Candidates who plan to run for alderman positions or for mayor in all three of the county’s municipalities have a little over two weeks remaining to submit paperwork before the Jan. 31 qualifying deadline.

Water Valley City Clerk Vivian Snider reported Monday that candidates from all five wards in the city have picked up the paperwork from city hall. Incumbent Mayor Tommy Reynolds told the Herald he plans to qualify to run for a full, four-year term. Reynolds was elected last February in a special election following a resignation in the office.

All candidates will run as independents in Water Valley, Coffeeville and Oakland. In Water Valley, Snider reported each candidate must get 50 signatures from registered voters in the ward they are running in. A mayoral candidate or alderman-at-large candidate can obtain candidates from any registered voter who resides in the city limits.

The General Election will be held on June 3. The new four-year term starts in July.
