WATER VALLEY – A Water Valley man was arrested Saturday on shoplifting charges after allegedly stealing two cases of beer from the Chevron Store on Central Street on Christmas Day.
Police Chief Jason Mangrum reported Vernon Rogers, 27, was arrested on Jan. 18 for an outstanding warrant for shoplifting. The arrest was made during a traffic stop. The store owner had filed the shoplifting charges on Dec. 26, a day after the clerk observed Rogers steal one case of Budweiser and a case of Corona beer.
“The store owner didn’t want to press charges on Christmas day,” Mangrum said. “They called the next day and the warrant was issued. We had been searching for Rogers.”
Other activity during the last week reported by the chief:
• Officers are investigating a stolen vehicle following a traffic stop on Boyd Street on Jan. 18. Mangrum reported the vehicle did not have a license tag, prompting the traffic stop.
“We ran the VIN and determined it was stolen out of Memphis,” Mangrum said.
No charges have been filed and the investigation continues.
• Ryan Hollinger, age 24, of Water Valley was charged with possession of paraphernalia on Jan. 19. Hollinger had contacted the police department requesting officers to respond to Stephens Street for a civil stand-by while he retrieved items from a relative’s house.
Officers detected the odor of marijuana and discovered that Hollinger was in possession of a marijuana pipe, prompting the charge.
• A five-year old child who slipped away from his residence was returned to his family on Jan. 14. Mangrum reported a citizen spotted the child walking on Main Street in front of El Charrito.
“We appreciate this concerned citizen, he recognized something was obviously wrong, the child was not wearing shoes and was alone. The child was transported to his residence on Gore Circle and reunited with his family.
The police department also contacted the Mississippi Department of Child Protective Services.
“This is normal protocol in this type of situation, we just want to make sure there are no issues in the home,” Mangrum explained.
