Bella Humphreys holds the target as an archery teammate pulls out the arrows. Humphreys and Heath Wren led the team in scoring in the first match of the season last week.
Welcome back to Inside the Blue and White! I cannot lie, it has just sort of been another week in the Valley. Sometimes our weeks are jam-packed, with endless things to mention, but this past week was not one of those. It was just a rather slow week. I think some of that can be attributed to all the rain we’ve had lately! Students spent most of their mornings this week drying off from the walk into the building.
As always, there were still things going on around school. The Interact Club met to begin planning their annual Library Day for Littles. This is a day we have put on for the past three years for parents to drop their children off to enjoy storytime, music, and a craft. We have hosted this event at Blackmur Library each year and look forward to hopefully hosting it there again! We met to discuss dates, a theme, and what kinds of crafts and activities we could have for the children.
We are hoping to host it around Earth Day, and teach kids about the planet, so be on the lookout for more details regarding this event!
Law and Public Safety students investigated how alcohol affects people’s vision, balance and coordination. They used “drunk goggles” that mimic various levels of intoxication. Using these goggles, students completed numerous tasks and challenges, like catching a ball or walking in a straight line. Students were able to have fun with this lesson whilst also learning about the very real and very dangerous effects that alcohol could potentially have on a person.
Basketball saw the end of their 2024-2025 season last week. The Lady Devils took on O’Bannon High School in their last game of the season. Though the girls fought hard, they came up short in a 26-50 game. The boys team played against Leflore County on Tuesday. This was also an extremely hard-fought game, but the Blue Devils came up short, and the game ended with a 47-67 score, favoring the Leflore Tigers.
Archery saw the beginning of their season last Friday. The team competed in their first match at Lafayette High School. Schools participating included Lafayette High School, Oxford High School, and Lafayette Middle School. Water Valley ended up placing a close second to the Chargers of OHS, with a team score of 3147 versus Oxford’s 3189.
Junior Isabelle Humphreys spoke about the match.
“It went great. I personally had a blast for the first match of the season and started off really great for myself. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season!”
Bella along with senior shooter Heath Wrenn led the team in scoring, both shooting a 278 for the match.
Baseball also had a first for the 2025 season, hosting their first home game Friday evening. The Blue Devils hosted the Lions of Regents School of Oxford (RSO) for both a junior varsity and varsity matchup. The devils fell to RSO with a final score of 9-5. Senior Isaiah Webb led the team in batting against the Lions.
Friday, of course, was also Valentine’s day! The office was full of special gifts for students sent by parents and loved ones. Students wore all kinds of festive clothing, reds and pinks, and celebrated their loved ones!
Softball is looking forward to getting going for their season. The team has games against Vardaman, Independence, and Winona coming up. They have been hard at work practicing and preparing.
