OAKLAND – Voters in the Town of Oakland will have numerous options as they vote on June 3 to elect a new Mayor and a five-member Town Board. Long-time Mayor James Riley Swearengen announced last year that he would not seek re-election.
Running for mayor are current Alderwoman Stephanie Patterson and Robert Jenkins. Candidates for positions of alderman or alderwoman include four incumbent board members, one former Alderman, and five new comers.
Running for the Town Board are incumbents Marzet Bland, Terry Ellis, Joe W. Jenkins and Sharonda Jones. Former Board member George Booker is seeking a spot as are Keontovious Clinton, Terry Crowder, Kenneth “Bud” Leland, and Latonya Richardson Sayle. Candidates have been certified by the Town Clerk.
Residents of Oakland may register to vote no later than March 3 at the Town Clerk’s Office at the Oakland Town Hall at 13863 Hickory Street in Oakland. State law also requires the Clerk’s Office to be open on Saturday, March 1, from 8 a.m. until noon to accommodate voter registration.
The general election will be held on June 3. All candidates run as independents in Oakland. There are no wards in Oakland and the top five vote getters in the alderman race are elected.
