In small towns, we measure greatness a little differently than much of the rest of the world. Here, it’s not about how many likes you get on a post or how many zeroes are in your paycheck. In Water Valley, greatness is measured in kind words, rides given without being asked, doing something just because it needs to be done, and the quiet, steady presence of someone who always seems to show up when it counts.
That spirit is exactly what the Braswell Hatcher Community Service Award was created by the Chamber to honor. It is a tribute to the kind of selfless commitment that keeps a town like ours not only running, but thriving. Named for the late Braswell Hatcher, whose life was defined by generosity and devotion to the Water Valley community, this award recognizes someone who has followed in his footsteps. Someone who gives not because there’s spotlights and applause, but because they believe it’s the right thing to do.
If you think back on the past award recipients, you’ll know exactly what I mean. They were the ones who never seemed too busy to help. They served on boards, they showed up early and stayed late to work on projects, they attended every fundraiser, and somehow, they always seemed to have the time and energy to do one more thing.
And let me tell you—those things add up. In a small town, community service isn’t just nice—it’s necessary. We don’t have endless resources to make things happen. What we do have is each other. And it’s the people who quietly volunteer their time and talents who make Water Valley shine.
Our quiet volunteers create ripple effects we may never fully see. Their influence stretches across years, generations even. A kind word, a thoughtful deed, a moment of help when someone needed it most—that’s the kind of thing people remember forever. Children grow up watching these acts of service and learn what it means to care for others. Strangers feel welcomed because someone took the time to notice them. The entire community is lifted up because volunteers decided to donate their time to help.
When we celebrate community service, we’re recognizing the glue that holds us all together and the Braswell Hatcher Community Service Award is a way to shine a light on those who usually prefer to work in the background.
This year’s recipient will be announced during the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Reception, scheduled for Thursday, April 24, at 6 p.m. at the Fountain Square Event Plaza. The reception is open to the public, and we’d love to see you there. It’s a special evening where we celebrate our shared accomplishments, reflect on the year gone by, look forward to our future, and honor the people who make Water Valley a better place to live.
Because the truth is community service doesn’t have to be grand or flashy. It just has to be real and heart-felt. This award allows the Chamber to recognize that all it takes is one person to make a real impact.
