Welcome back to Inside the Blue and White! We are counting down the days to the end of the year, and seniors especially are anticipating the days leading up to May 23. Last week started slow but things certainly picked up by the weekend! WVHS & WVJH honor roll students were rewarded with cake and punch as administrators are always working to ensure students are recognized for their dedication in the classroom.

STAR Student Jenna Trusty and STAR teach Anna Koshenina attended the Mississippi Economic Council STAR Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition Program in Jackson where they were honored as 2025 recipients.
I had the opportunity to spend Thursday morning in Pearl with Mrs. Koshenina as we attended the Mississippi Economic Council (MEC) STAR Student–Teacher Achievement Recognition Program. We were recognized alongside 301 other STAR students and teachers across the state. A STAR student must have an ACT score of at least 25 and an overall average of 93 or above in selected subjects in the ninth, tenth, 11th, and the first-semester of 12th grade.
MEC funds this program in an effort to encourage scholastic achievement among the state’s high school students. The STAR Program has two specific purposes: firstly, it aims to emphasize scholastic excellence and encourage greater scholastic effort among Mississippi students and secondly, it garners great recognition of the teaching profession.
The Interact Club is preparing to host their major community service event for the year – their annual library day! The 3rd Annual Library Day for Littles will take place on April 26 at Blackmur Memorial Library from 10 a.m. to noon This is a free event for any children in kindergarten through sixth grade, and students will have the opportunity to read about Earth Day while participating in a craft and games! We’ve had a lot of success with this event during the past few years, so I hope we can keep that going this year. It’s something that I love to help put on, and I am so very grateful for the members of our community that help it happen!
Baseball recognized their senior players on Saturday afternoon. These players include Laine Burns, Isaiah Webb, Kaden Norlander, Tyler Richardson, Maverick French, Reid Burress, and John McMinn.
Both softball and baseball are gearing up for playoffs here soon, preparing to finish out their respective seasons. Senior archery member Lillien White represented the Blue Devil archery team at the statewide ALL STARS competition in Jackson over the weekend. She went out with a bang for her last time shooting as a high schooler, earning second place and a $4,000 scholarship in the competition.
Our track and field team had an awesome weekend at the district meet, walking away with many top-three finishes, and even multiple champions. Eighty grader Akera White makes school history again, breaking both her own personal record and the school-wide record along with becoming district champion for the 200 meter dash. She also broke both records for the 100 meter dash, finishing 1st place again.
Akera White, Tylisha Hall, Joniyah Benson, and Janiayah Gooch emerged as district champions in the 4×100 relay. Junior Kristaney Reed found success in the triple jump, winning with a new personal record of 30 feet, 10 and one-half inches. Other major success was found by seniors Anthony Butler, Dylan Moore, Donalvin Wilson and Ezaryon Riley, all of whom will compete in Super Regionals on Wednesday in Pontotoc.
We are getting closer and closer to the end of the school year, and between Easter holiday, field trips, and upcoming state tests, summer will be here before we know it!
