Water Valley High School senior Jackson Herrera was presented the Stanley Crow Award at the annual band banquet. This award is the highest honor that a Water Valley band member can receive. The award was presented by Becky Crow, the wife of the late Stan Crow.
As we approach the final stretch of the school year, things are wrapping up quickly here in Water Valley. We only have a few more updates before summer break officially begins! The past few weeks have been packed with energy and excitement as we work hard to close out the year on a high note.
From celebrations and recognitions to state competitions and final preparations, it’s clear that the dedication of our students, teachers, and community continues to shine. We spent the past week celebrating the ones who make it happen – our teachers! Being an educator is one of the most challenging professions, requiring not only academic knowledge but also patience, compassion, and a deep commitment to student success.
It’s certainly not a job for everyone, but thankfully, Water Valley is home to some of the very best. It was National Teacher Appreciation Week, so the teachers had good meals, games, and treats for them in store the entire week. This was all made possible due to the generosity of Dr. Vicki Person, Sylva Rena Baptist Church, FNB Water Valley and so many more community members! Thank you for helping show our teachers some love, as they are the ones who truly make a student’s education.
The school district has been recognizing seniors on district’s Facebook page as we count down the days until graduation. Each member of the Class of 2025 has had the opportunity to share their post-high school plans along with one of their favorite memories from their time at WVHS. It’s a special way to recognize the hard work of each graduating senior.
Seniors are also gearing up for their traditional walk through on Thursday, May 15th, before they head into their awards day. Students will be honored with scholarships, stoles, and cords, as well as celebrate their school decision by signing after awards day concludes!
State testing has wrapped up, but students still have a few more weeks to go before being let out for the summer and students are anxiously awaiting the exemption list! If a student has three or less absences for the second semester and has maintained good grades, they earn the privilege of being exempt from their final exams! It’s an awesome way to reward students for the hard-work and dedication they put into the classroom year round.
Our track team members had a big time at the state meet in Pearl as the Blue Devils came away with four top-three placements, including a state championship title!
Senior Anthony Butler won first place for 2A with a jump of 6’.
Fellow senior Donalvin “Dee” Wilson finished state runner-up in shot put with a throw of 44’-7.2”! The girls found lots of success at the state meet as well. Eighth grader Akera White placed runner-up in the 100 meter dash – finishing out her already extremely successful season with a bang!
Akera White, Tylisha Hall, Janiayah Gooch, and Joniyah Benson placed runner up in the 4×200 meter relay. Congratulations to all our state qualifiers! The track team has had such a great run this year!
Last Tuesday, May 6,, the Water Valley Band held its annual Band Banquet, celebrating a successful and music-filled season. Many awards were given out, including the Stanley Crow Award presented to Jackson Herrera by former Band Director Becky Crow, in a touching moment that honored both musical excellence and dedication. The Stanley Crow Award is the highest honor that a member of the Water Valley High School Band can receive.
The award is dedicated to former WVHS Band director Stanley Crow and the level of greatness he helped the band achieve during his time as director.
As we enter the final week of school, it’s clear that this has been a year full of hard work, progress, and meaningful accomplishments across the district. From academic milestones and athletic achievements to fine arts recognition and community support, Water Valley continues to show what’s possible when everyone works together. We’re proud of how far our students and staff have come, and we’re looking forward to wrapping up the school year on a strong note.
