• 10 Years Ago, July 9, 2015 – Excitement is building as 24 candidates are competing in four heavily contested supervisors’ races in the August 4 Primary Election. This week’s edition of the Herald contains input from 20 supervisor candidates responding to a questionnaire jointly sponsored by this newspaper and the Water Valley Business Alliance (WVBA).
Answers from five of the eight questions on the questionnaire span pages 13-16 in the Herald as candidates go on the record about numerous issues in the county. The entire questionnaire is also available online at yalnews.com and next week’s edition will include the remaining three questions. WVBA President Eddie Ray reports the goal is to educate voters.

• 20 Years Ago, July 7, 2005 – Chancery Judge Mitch Lundy administered the oath of office for Water Valley Aldermen and Mayor. The group included Alderman-at-Large Lance Clement, Mayor Bill Norris, Charlie Harris, Fred White, Tommy Swearengen, and Sherry Johnson Martin.
Yalobusha County Sheriff Steve Shuffield was given a 2005 Award of Excellence for his participation in the state’s Inmate Litter Removal Program. MDOT presented the award.
• 30 Years Ago, July 13, 1995 – Water Valley Municipal Judge Trent Howell administered the oath of office to Vivian Snider as she assumed her duties as the new city clerk.
Jennifer Jones was named an All-American Scholar by the United States Academic Academy.
Nancy Margaret Ray was selected to participate in the 1995 session of the Governor’s School at the Mississippi University for Women.
Water Valley’s Sixteen and Under Girls Softball Team participated in the Class B State Tournament held at Batesville. Meanwhile, the 12 and Under Girls’ Softball Team advanced to their state tournament to be held in Meridian.
Mandy Mills, a member of the Yalobusha County 4-H Horse Club, won first place for speaking and her visual presentation about horses at the 4-H Junior Achievement Day in Moorhead.
• 40 Years Ago, July 11, 1985 – Two Yalobusha County men received 15-year sentences after being charged with possession of 29 pounds of marijuana with intent to sell. The pair were Johnny Mac Jones and Joe Miller Guest.
The Pisgah Hunting Club planned the first meeting of the 1985–86 hunting season. All members and prospective members were invited to enjoy grilled hamburgers, hotdogs, coleslaw, French fries, and cold drinks.
• 50 Years Ago, July 10, 1975 – Petitions are being circulated in the Water Valley School District asking the Board of Supervisors to issue bonds for new school construction. The trustees were seeking to replace the Jeff Davis School Building and the two Calhoun Street buildings with a new structure. They are also seeking the building of an auditorium to serve the school.
Northern District Highway Commissioner Herschel Jumper said here Saturday that plans are nearing completion to let a contract on Highway 7 between Water Valley and Coffeeville to “give them a good highway to travel on.”

• 60 Years Ago, July 8, 1965 – Tornado-like winds around noon on July 7 created damage to trees and signs in Water Valley. The homes of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Catchings on Crisp Street and Dr. and Mrs. W. S. Young on Lincrest Lane were damaged when large tree branches split off and punched through roofs; and the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ruel Vaughn on Dupuy Street, where lightning accompanying the storm struck the house and started a small attic fire. Also damaged were the metal awning on the front of Cook’s Bargain Store on Main Street, and Webb’s Rexall Drug sign was damaged.
W. W. Turnage marked a milestone Thursday when he filled the 300,000th prescription since returning to Water Valley in December 1944. The prescription was filled for Mrs. Esther Bryan of Water Valley.
• 70 Years Ago, July 12, 1945 – Two residents of Water Valley have entered the Basic Training Center at Keesler Field, a unit of the Army Air Forces Training Command, for several weeks of recruit drill. The new recruits are Pvt. Wiley W. Walker, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley W. Walker, Sr., and Pvt. John K. Gurner, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. G. Gurner.
President John Horan of the Water Valley Rotary Club announced his committees for the year beginning July 1.
Among committees are: Aims and Objects – Pennie Garrett, Howard Nolen, H. H. White, Jack Barnett, and Bob Oakley.
