ENID LAKE – Young anglers will get their shot at the big one when the annual Youth Fish Rodeo returns Saturday, May 16, at the Bob Tyler Fish Hatchery Visitor Education Center.
The free event hosted by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) is open to children ages 15 and younger, with registration beginning at 7 a.m. Organizers encourage participants to bring their own rods, bait and a container to carry home their catch, though water will be provided on site.
Prizes will be awarded, and the event offers a chance for beginners to catch their first fish, while giving more experienced young anglers an opportunity to sharpen their skills. The hatchery is located below Enid Dam in Yalobusha County, Exit 233 off of I-55.
The rodeo is one of several upcoming programs at the center aimed at getting youth outdoors and connected to Mississippi’s natural resources.
A full-day “Fish Camp” is scheduled for June 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for youth ages 10 to 15. The camp will include fish identification, water safety instruction, a tour of the hatchery and fishing opportunities in the center’s pond. Pre-registration is required.
Younger children can take part in “Puppet Theatre Thursdays,” held each Thursday in June and July at 2 p.m. The program features “Toby the Turtle,” who introduces children to aquatic wildlife and basic conservation concepts in an interactive setting.
