Murry Green Jr.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Murry “Moe” Green Jr. passed away peacefully on April 28, 2026, in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was 83 years old.
Born on April 12, 1943, in Mississippi, Murry was the second of three children. He was raised in Water Valley, where he graduated from Water Valley High School in 1961. He continued his education at Northwest Junior College and later attended the University of Mississippi.
In his early years, Murry embraced adventure and hard work. While attending college in Texas, he spent his summers working at Yellowstone National Park in 1964 and 1965. In 1966, he worked security at a casino in Lake Tahoe. He also pursued his passion for ski racing in Colorado and enjoyed owning and riding horses in Wyoming. That same year, he graduated from North Texas State University.
In 1967, Murry answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. He completed Officer Candidate School and pilot training, going on to serve in Vietnam as a pilot. He flew more than 800 combat missions, including missions on the final day of the fall of Saigon. For his service, he was awarded the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross. He honorably served from 1967 to 1979.
Following his military service, Murry began a distinguished career with Southwest Airlines during its early startup years. He remained with the airline as it grew into one of the nation’s leading carriers, retiring as a senior pilot in 2003. He made his home in Arizona, with his final residence in Scottsdale.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Murry Green Sr. and Virginia Taylor Green; and his sisters, Barbara Green Theodore and Carol Kay Green.
He is survived by his nieces, Jeanette Perkins (Todd) and Sandra Theodore; his nephew, Ricky Theodore (Ruby); his great-nephews, Peyton Murry Maples and Brandon Rodriguez-Theodore; as well as Sharon Green, Nancy Thornton, and numerous cousins.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on June 12, at 10:30 a.m. at Magnolia Cemetery in Batesville.
