Michael Gene Burrowes

COURTLAND – Michael Gene Burrowes, affectionately known as “Smiley,” passed away June 8, 2026, at the age of 41.

Born Oct. 20, 1984, in Grenada, Michael made his home in Courtland. He worked as a brick mason and was known for his strong work ethic, generous spirit and willingness to help others. Whether on a job site, spending time outdoors or helping family and friends, Michael approached life with a kind heart and a ready smile that earned him his nickname.

Michael’s greatest joy was his son, Michael Andrew Burrowes, whom he loved dearly. Family members said he was devoted to those he loved and could always be counted on when someone needed a helping hand.

An avid outdoorsman, Michael enjoyed fishing and hunting and especially loved deep-sea fishing. He found peace in nature and treasured the simple pleasures of time spent outdoors. He also had a special love for animals and never hesitated to care for those that crossed his path.

Michael was especially devoted to his family and remained a constant source of support for his mother during times of need. His kindness, loyalty and compassion left a lasting impression.

Survivors include his son, Michael Andrew Burrowes; his mother, Martha Jean Burrowes; sisters, Misty Burrowes and Tina Stevens; nieces, Faith, Destiny and Madalyn; and nephews, Devin and John Bennett.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dennis Gene Burrowes.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Seven Oaks Funeral Home. Family viewing will begin at 11 a.m., followed by visitation at noon and the funeral service at 2 p.m.

Though his time was far too short, Michael leaves behind many cherished memories and the example of a life lived with kindness, generosity and love for family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

John Dale Jennings

WATER VALLEY – John Dale Jennings, 78, of Water Valley, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 9, at Coleman Funeral Home.

Dale was born Jan. 8, 1948, in Como to the late Louis Jennings and Lavonia Boyett Jennings. He retired from Georgia-Pacific’s manufacturing division, earning the respect of coworkers through his dedication and strong work ethic. Dale never let his hands stay idle and took pride in hard work, whether tending his garden or keeping his yard in shape.

Dale also enjoyed watching the birds, especially cardinals and hummingbirds that visited his yard, always making sure they had food and a place to rest. 

He never met a stranger. His straightforward manner and easy conversation put everyone at ease. Dale valued his family above all and was always there for friends, neighbors and anyone who needed a helping hand. A man of deep faith, Dale lived his beliefs through action and service. He believed in strength through kindness and led by example, living each day with humility and purpose. 

He is survived by his wife, Melinda Avritt Jennings of Water Valley; two daughters, Gayle Plaisance and husband Hickman of Water Valley, and Melissa Camp and husband Jr. of Water Valley; three grandchildren, Courtney Patton and husband Jarrett of Courtland, Joshua Butler and partner Amanda of Charlotte, N.C., and Kaitlin Corley and husband Josh of Winona; seven great-grandchildren, Callie Patton, Cooper Patton, Wyatt Patton, Alex Weldon, Carson Weldon, Coy Butler and Salem Corley, who is expected to arrive in November 2026; and two siblings, Paul Jennings of Oxford and Marianne Jennings of Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Jennings and Lavonia Boyett Jennings; and four siblings, Ruby Murphy Wood, Nell Norwood, Halla Lee Jennings and V.J. Jennings.
