Rev. Guy Reedy celebrated his 84th birthday surrounded by friends and family in 2006. Some of the friends and family gathering for the event were Ann Carr, Sam Forsyth, Barbara Newman, Zandra Walker, Betty Hart, Brenda Smith, Jimmy Berry, Shirley Berry, Nellie Gardiner. Also with Rev. Reedy was his wife, Doris Reedy.
20 Years—September 21, 2006 — Water Valley High School changed security procedures for the football games. Four off-duty county deputies are now providing security at all home football games.
A little-known program has been providing food for seniors in Water Valley for almost two decades. The meals are served at the American Legion Hut and are provided by North Central Planning and Development District’s Area Agency on Aging. Pictured were Earline and John Hairston, who prepare and serve the meals each day.
Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce’s choice as Business of the Week is Turnage Drug Store. Owners and employees are Binnie and Jo Turnage, Bobby and Monica Turnage, Kelley Miller, Clare Spence, Peggy Leho, Patricia Pratt, Sheila Flippin and Regina Aven.
Ashley Wilbourn, a senior at Millsaps College, received the prestigious Corre Anding Stegall Leadership Award, a national award. She is a member of Kappa Delta’s Mu Chapter and this award is the highest given by Kappa Delta.
The Blue Devils were defeated by the Senatobia Warriors in a hard-fought battle, which was decided in the final 16 seconds of the game.
30 Years—September 26, 1996 — Deputy Chancery Clerk Lilly Loyce Horan will retire and is being honored at a retirement party Sept. 27.
The Blue Devils defeated the Lafayette Commodores, 14-13, in a rain-soaked game. Captains for the game were Reggie Pullen, Dan Whitehead, Brian Walls and Adam Peacock.
Mayor Larry Hart announced that Water Valley has received a $350,000 HOME grant to rehabilitate 17 homes in the city.
The Lady Devils softball team defeated Charleston, but lost to Independence. Team members pictured while playing in these games were Julia Bailey, Ashley Langdon and Jennifer Jones. Coaching the team were Kristi Lancaster and Missy Avant.
Yalobusha County’s Joe Smith and his palomino mare, Tetra, took reserve champion honors at the State Championship Horse Show in Jackson.
40 Years—September 25, 1986 — Wayland Hill, son of Ann and Dean Hill of Water Valley, was recognized for his service to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Vicksburg District.
The Water Valley Blue Devils came up with a surprise 8-7 win over the powerful Senatobia Warriors. The Devils’ defense had been strong throughout the game, holding the Warriors to a lone touchdown. The offense struggled until late in the game when fullback Bobby Hervey drove the last 13 yards in two rushes for the score. Then Bryan Daniels took the pitch from quarterback John Ingram and dived through two defensive Warriors to take the ball into the end zone for the two-point conversion. Daniels, earlier in the game, was injured and teammates Terry Hervey, John Callahan and Michael Stevens carried him off the field. Team physician Dr. Joe Walker examined him and found the injury was not serious.
The first two recipients of the Gertrude Hudson Turner Memorial Scholarship were Denise Riley of Water Valley and Kellie Wood of Coffeeville. Each was to receive a $5,000 scholarship to attend the University of Mississippi during the 1986-87 academic year.
50 Years—September 23, 1976 — The Water Valley Junior High Rifle Squad included Sandra Theodore, daughter of Mrs. Barbara Theodore, an eighth grader, and Jennifer Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Baxter Jones, a seventh grader.
The state representative district lines are being changed. New District 11 will include Beats 1, 2, 3 and 4 of Yalobusha County, and Beats 3 and 4 of Panola County. Yalobusha Beat 5 will be added to Calhoun County. Senatorial redistricting keeps Yalobusha and Panola counties in District 10, but will add Beat 3 of Calhoun County.
The powerful Senatobia Warriors defeated the Blue Devils, 40-6, in Friday’s meeting. Buddy Willingham put the lone score on the board for Water Valley in the fourth quarter.
60 Years—September 2, 1966 — Ram Tool officials visited Water Valley and were honored with a reception at the city library. City, county and chamber officials present to greet their guests were: Water Valley Mayor L.C. Stewart; Chamber President Oscar Parsons; Hon. J.P. Stone, county attorney; attorney for the City of Water Valley, Hon. Murray Williams; and Beat Three Supervisor Tommy Swearengen, Sr.
The Water Valley Blue Devils came from behind to defeat the Holly Springs Tigers Friday night, 26-14. Water Valley players mentioned in the write-up were Tommy Hudson, Randy Parsons and Larry McCay.
Oakland Mayor W.C. Callaway signed applications for grants of $8,200 and $362,000, and loan applications in the amount of $92,000, for water improvement and a sewerage disposal system for this west Yalobusha County town.
70 Years—September 27, 1956 — In the annual Yalobusha County “Queen of the Forest” Contest, held Tuesday night in the Water Valley City Auditorium, Patsy Hart was selected as queen. First alternate was Georgia Wortham of Coffeeville, and second alternate was Sue Pittman, also of Coffeeville.
The Water Valley Blue Devils will invade the domicile of an ancient foe when they meet Batesville, now playing in the Delta Valley Conference. This is reported to be one of the bitterest rivals in the Magnolia State. The Devils are the decided underdogs. Friday night, though, the Blue Devils had defeated the Crenshaw team, 41-0, playing in the Chickasaw Conference.
Cheering for the Water Valley Pee Wee Football Team, as they meet the Marks’ Pee Wees, will be Nancy Turner, Lou Larson, Jane Larson, Betty Miller, Toxie Fortinberry and Kay-Kay Wilbourn.
80 Years—September 26, 1946 — James Lipscomb, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Lipscomb, died from injuries sustained in a car-truck accident shortly after reaching Water Valley Hospital. The crash happened about two miles north of Coffeeville on Highway 7 and the cause was attributed to the driver of the other vehicle.
The first game of the football season will be played against the strong Grenada Bulldogs. This will be the initial appearance of the Blue Devils under Coaches Tommy Gunn and Charlie Trenor.
Since June, the renewal fee for driver’s licenses has been 50 cents instead of the previous 25 cents. The announcement is being made because many renewals are mailed directly to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, with only a 25-cent payment. Renewals may also be made at the City Clerk’s Office or at the Yalobusha County Sheriff’s Office.
