Alarm Call Leads To Unusual Arrest

COFFEEVILLE – Deputies charged Sara Chrestman Cain with burglary and malicious mischief after catching her inside a home Sunday.
“She was cooking baked beans and chicken,” Sheriff Lance Humphreys reported about the unusual arrest. “She told the deputy she was hungry.”
To make matters even more interesting, the suspect had also cleaned up the house, located on County Road 172 outside Coffeeville, according to the sheriff.
“We got her something to eat after she was booked in the jail,” Humphreys added.
The investigation initially started at another residence in the vicinity after dispatchers received a call from an alarm company about a potential burglary. The deputy arrived on the scene and discovered that entry had been forced, damaging a back door. The homeowners also arrived and suggested the deputy check the second residence, which is used as a hunting cabin and is often unoccupied.
Humphreys said the charges stem from the first house and the owner of the hunting cabin declined to press charges because there was no damage and the only thing missing was a few groceries.
