WATER VALLEY – The Town & Country Garden Club opened its fall season with a September meeting at the Yalobusha Country Club in Water Valley.
Hostesses for the 5 p.m. meeting were Patsy Humphreys and Jessie Gurner.
The featured speaker was Sherra Owen, a retired Home Economics and Character Education teacher with 33 years of classroom experience and a longtime educator on native plants and the natural world. Owen is an Audubon Master Naturalist and a member of The Garden Clubs of Mississippi and the Mississippi Native Plant Society. She has shared her knowledge of native plants as an educator, tour guide and speaker since 1986.
Owen also serves as curator of the William Faulkner Literary Garden at the Union County Heritage Museum, where she interprets plants associated with Faulkner’s fictional Yoknapatawpha County. She and her husband, Ken, maintain a native woodland garden and mile-long trail through a mature riparian forest that they open for educational programs.
Her program, “Gardening on the Wild Side with Nature’s Most Important Plants,” focused on the creation of a native woodland garden, the five senses, and the food, folklore, medicinal uses and sustainability of native plants.
Owen summed up her enthusiasm for the natural world simply: “I love God. I love my family. I love people. I love plants and nature. I love sharing stories about all of them.”
