Supervisors Issue Emergency Proclamation After Flooding
A hard working crew pitched in to help put sand bags around Super Lube in Water Valley after the water pushed to within inches of flooding the business. Among those lending a helping hand were Water Valley Police Chief A.J. Hernandez, Water Valley Fire Chief Sherman Gooch, EMA Director Frank Hyde and Sheriff Lance Humphreys. The water slowly started receding just as the barricade was installed.
Chancery Clerk Amy McMinn explained that the proclamation issued by supervisors could help the county qualify for federal assistance if there is enough damage is reported in multiple counties. McMinn also said the proclamation allows county workers to enter private property if the work is flood related.
“If you want to sandbag to protect somebody’s house, you can do it,” Board Attorney John Crow explained.
“It is important for everyone to understand that we had this event but there are a couple of more events that may come behind this,” Board President Cayce Washington explained, as the extended forecast shows more rain on the already saturated ground.
Washington also explained that the proclamation of emergency will last for 30 days.
“We want to protect the interest of the county and our constituents,” Washington also explained during the brief meeting. An estimated eight counties were impacted by the storm.
