Baltimore author Rafael Alvarez will share stories from his new book.
A parlor reading by Baltimore author and screenwriter Rafael Alvarez sharing stories from his new book, “Basilio Boullosa Stars in the Fountain of Highland-town,’ is scheduled Friday, March 9, at 7 p.m.
Alvarez is a former staff writer for the HBO drama “The Wire” and the author of four books of literary fiction. He will be joined by Matthew Zediker, a multi-instrumentalist majoring in music and mathematics at Ole Miss. Among Zedi-ker’s many inspirations – from the blues to ’60s psychedelia – he is enamored of the music of Don Van Vliet (1941-to-2010), a visionary better known as Captain Beefheart. Alvarez interviewed Van Vliet in Philadelphia in the early 1980s. The show will be emceed by Tyrone Crawley, scholar of American soul music.
The event comes on the 30th anniversary of Alvarez’s pilgrimage to Mississippi when he and Crawley criss-crossed the Magnolia State to raise awareness for literacy programs and interviewed river tow-boat captains about the great drought of 1988.
The reading will be held at the home of artists Pati D’Amico and Bill Warren at 200 Panola Street. For more information contact D’Amico at 318.655.2623 or Alvarez at orlo.leini@ gmail.com.
