WATER VALLEY – A Water Valley man was charged with one count of drive-by shooting following an incident on Blackmur Drive Tuesday afternoon.
Water Valley Chief Jason Mangrum reported Christopher Schneider, 18, was in custody within two hours of the shooting. The chief added that additional arrests are likely.
The victim was walking on Blackmur Drive near the intersection with Haynes Street when he was shot one time in the abdomen. Schneider was returning to work when he allegedly fired the round from his vehicle.
“This appeared to stem from an ongoing dispute,” the chief explained. “Our suspect was on his lunch break when he saw the victim on Blackmur. After the shooting, Schneider returned to work like nothing happened.”
Mangrum said the victim was alert and talking to officers and paramedics after the shooting. A medevac helicopter arrived approximately 30 minutes later to transport the victim to a hospital in Memphis or Tupelo.
Mangrum praised strong cooperation for the rapid arrest.
“The patrolmen and office staff went above and beyond. We scrambled everybody to help with this investigation and they knocked it out of the park,” he explained. “The employees at the Water Valley Housing Authority were also a great asset, they helped tremendously.”
The investigative work included reviewing surveillance videos from cameras in the vicinity of the crime, tracking down the suspect’s vehicle license tag and ultimately his vehicle within 30 minutes of the shooting. The suspect was apprehended shortly afterward.
Mangrum also extended gratitude to the suspect’s work supervisor for assisting officers.
