STAFF REPORT – The eighth grade Blue Devils defeated class 5A Lafayette County Commodores, 12-6, on Tuesday, September 3. The defense pitched another shutout as the only Commodores’ points came on a defensive touchdown as time expired in the first half.
The Blue Devils got on the board first as quarterback Easton Newman found wide receiver Johnathan Malone for a 16-yard touchdown strike. The two-point conversion failed. In the second half, the Blue Devils rushing game was featured behind the offensive line of Mitch Edwards, Alden Hubbard, Carter Pullen, Cooper Burrowes, Joshua Collins, and Jose Guzman. De’Marea Johnson found paydirt on a one-yard touchdown rush with only a minute to go. Johnson and linebacker Landyn Logan put a lot of pressure on the Commodore offense to end the game and secure the victory.
The seventh grade team fell to (0-2) with a 22 to six loss to the Commodores. The lone Blue Devil score came on a 52-yard rush by running back Noah Judson. The junior varsity Blue Devils were also defeated 28 to eight to close out the games.
Defensively, the Blue Devils were paced by defensive linemen Kaleb Vire, Parker Logan, and Nehemiah Brown as they had four stops each. Late in the game, quarterback Robert Swanner found Brown in the right flat and he took it the distance on a 61-yard passing touchdown. Running back Dakota Burrowes added the two-point conversion.
All three teams were back in action at presstime Tuesday at Bobby Clark Field as they hosted the J.Z. George Jaguars.
