Welcome back to the last Inside the Blue and White report from 2024! It is so hard to believe that we are already halfway done with the school year. It has surely flown by fast and students are enjoying the holidays with their friends and family.
During our last week of school the focus was on exams, but the student council was still determined to spread some holiday cheer. The group gathered on Monday at break to sing Christmas carols for everyone to enjoy during their passing period. This is something the student council has done during Christmas for as long as I’ve been at WVHS. We performed “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” “Jingle Bells,” and “Deck the Halls.”
Then, on Tuesday, students were invited to wear pajamas for the last day of WVHS 10 days of Christmas. Student council members passed out treat bags to every student, containing goodies like candy and stickers! All of the extra bags and goodies were donated to Davidson Elementary for teachers to pass out or use as rewards.

The cross-county rivalry matchup between the Blue Devils and Pirates on Dec. 17 was one of the mostly highly anticipated games of the varsity boys’ basketball season. Aaden Reed (right) shoots and scores in the high-action game against the Coffeeville but the Pirates won, 52 – 20.
The biggest event of the week was, without a doubt, basketball on Tuesday night. In a cross-county rival matchup, the Blue Devils took on the Pirates from Coffeeville at home. This was one of the most highly anticipated games of the season. The stands were absolutely packed, with a long line forming to get in hours before the game even started. Every single parking spot was taken up, with fans having to park in the roads and grass surrounding the school. It was certainly the place to be that night! I had to cheer for the varsity games, and got there right around the time junior varsity boys game was ending. Apparently, I missed two great games! Both of our junior varsity teams found success, with the boys winning 42 to 12 and the girls also recording a victory.
The varsity girls game was a super exciting one to cheer for, especially with a close first half. Neither side was keen on letting their opponent get more than a few points ahead. In the second half, though, the Lady Devils managed to pull ahead, beating Coffeeville in a 50 to 31 matchup.
The main event, though, was the varsity boys game. With a tough matchup against the Pirates, who already had a winning record, there was no telling how the game would end!

Water Valley football coach Coach Clint Faust and Donalvin Wilson were on the roster for the 76th Annual Mississippi Association of Coaches Bernard Blackwell All-Star Classic. Faust was an assistant coach for the North Team, and Wilson played for the North Team. The North Team won, 16-13, breaking a four-year losing streak against the South Team.
The crowd was so energetic, and the gymnasium was packed full. I believe we even reached capacity, having to turn away late fans at the door. Between excited fans, coaches, and cheerleaders, it was a super loud environment and the players were pumped. The game was neck and neck practically the entire time, with each team trading off the lead. In the end, what was supposed to be a big blowout game came to a matter of seconds.
The Pirates claimed victory over the varsity Blue Devils in a 50 to 52 game. It was certainly one of the most energetic and action-packed games I’ve ever gotten the opportunity to cheer at.
I’d say our football season is finally officially over for every player, after Donalvin Wilson and Coach Clint Faust traveled to the coast for the Bernard Blackwell All-Star Classic Game at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 21. Both helped represent north Mississippi and Water Valley as a part of the North Team. The North Team managed to break a four-year losing streak against the South, notching a nice win!
We will be back in school on Jan. 7, and students will certainly hit the ground running with all sorts of events and activities. I can’t wait to write about what we get into during our second semester, leading into spring break, and the homestretch of the school year!
