OAKLAND – Alderwoman Stephanie Patterson filed papers this week to run for the position of Mayor in Oakland. Long-time Mayor James Riley Swearengen announced last year that he would not seek the position after 45 years of public service.
Patterson is completing her first term on the town board and currently serves on the Oakland Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors as Secretary/Treasurer. She also serves on the Oakland Beautification Committee and has worked on the Juneteenth Celebration since its inception. She is a member of and regularly attends Parrish Grove M.B. Church in Oakland.
Patterson was born and raised in Oakland where at least five generations of her family have lived and contributed. She attended and graduated from Coffeeville High School. She then attended Northwest Community College pursuing an Associate Degree in Business Management. She received her degree at the University of Mississippi in Criminal Justice with minors in Emergency Management and Psychology and Sociology. She has also completed every training level offered by the Mississippi Municipal League and has attained the Certified Municipal Official designation. She continues taking courses offered by the MML and serves on the MML Conference Planning Committee.
She and her husband, Kel Andrews, have two sons, Tavauric and Kameron.
“I am excited about the energy in our town and I look forward to continuing to hear from our residents and working to achieve the dreams we all have for Oakland. I am honored by those who have encouraged me to run for Mayor,” Patterson said.
