Have you ever stood in a room full of people and felt completely at home?
That’s exactly how it felt at this year’s Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce Reception, held at the beautiful Fountain Square. It wasn’t just a gathering. It wasn’t just great food and good music. It was a celebration of everything our town does right—because in Water Valley, community isn’t just a word. It’s a way of life.
Let me tell you what I saw that night. When you walked through the doors, the first thing you noticed wasn’t the decorations or the music—it was the feeling. Last year’s Braswell Hatcher Award winner, Linda Maynor, along with our newly crowned Watermelon Queen, Mya Harden, greeted guests with smiles that could’ve lit up the whole street.
Inside the main room, there was that unmistakable buzz: conversations sparking, warm hugs exchanged, eyes lighting up as friends spotted each other across the room. You didn’t have to know everyone to feel welcome. No one was left out. Whether you were a business owner, a volunteer, a retiree, or a student—you belonged. That’s the magic of Water Valley.
The Chamber had a lot to celebrate this year, and outgoing Chamber President Angie Hodge guided the evening with her signature mix of humor, gratitude and heart.
One of the most special moments of the evening was when we honored the Elliott Scholarship recipients, Mallory Tidwell and Jenna Trusty. These two young leaders stood before a packed room, and you could feel the pride of parents, teachers, and neighbors. In Water Valley, when one of us succeeds, we all succeed.
The crowd listened intently to remarks from Mayor Tommy Reynolds, whose optimism is a driving force for our town’s future. His support for every community effort, big or small, was felt throughout the night. Equally exciting were the remarks from Kagan Coughlin describing future plans for the county.
An unforgettable moment was the presentation of the Braswell Hatcher Community Service Award to Bill Norris. If you know Bill, you know this was well-deserved. For years, he’s been one of those quiet, reliable forces behind so many good things in Water Valley. Whether he’s volunteering his time, lending a helping hand, or lifting others up without asking for recognition, Bill embodies the spirit of this award. When his name was announced, the entire room burst into applause, and it was a beautiful reminder that in Water Valley, true service doesn’t go unnoticed. It’s celebrated, deeply and sincerely.
A particularly touching moment came when Turnage Drug Store was honored with the very first Business of the Year award. This isn’t just a pharmacy—it’s part of Water Valley’s heart. Chamber President Angie Hodge shared that she worked there as a teenager—and so did her daughter—proof of the deep roots Turnage has in this town. When Binnie Turnage accepted the award, surrounded by his family, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. It was a reminder that the best businesses don’t just serve a community—they become part of the family.
Now, I know Christmas feels a long way off, but holiday magic was already stirring. The Chamber revealed exciting news: new Christmas decorations for Main Street! And not just any decorations—gigantic snowflakes that will make downtown look like something straight out of a Christmas card. The room lit up – literally – and in the glow of a giant snowflake, you could almost hear the jingle bells and smell the hot chocolate, just thinking about how beautiful downtown will look this December.
Is Water Valley perfect? No place is. But here, people care. They try. They show up. And the people in that room? They’re the ones who open businesses, raise funds for scholarships, volunteer, sell watermelons, dream up events, and welcome new faces like old friends. They’re the heartbeat of Water Valley.
