Chamber Report
By Jessie Gurner
Winter has not packed up and left. Not by a long shot.
The mornings still make you shiver when you step outside. Lawns look worn out. The sky has spent more time gray than blue. Tree debris still lines sidewalks, a reminder of what we just went through and of the steady work still underway.
It is still winter in Water Valley, even if we did have warm days that tried to fool us all.
You know how our weather is. One morning it is in the 30s, and you are digging out gloves. The next day it is pushing 70, and you are standing in the yard wondering if you should be planting tomatoes.
Water Valley feels a little like that right now, too.
The urgency has eased, and we are not in crisis mode anymore. But the cleanup is still underway, and there is much more work to be done. Like these days that start cold and end warm, we are moving forward, just not all at once.
But if you slow down and really look around, you will notice something steady.
Storefront windows glow in the early morning. Coffee is being poured. Delivery trucks are making their rounds. Someone is out there sweeping a sidewalk that will probably need sweeping again tomorrow. It is the quiet start of another workday.
Across Water Valley, Chamber businesses are doing what they have always done. Doors unlocked. Phones answered. Trucks rolling out. Whether they serve you face to face or head out to meet you on the job, they are showing up, whether it is 28 degrees or 68.
Winter has never been the easy season for small businesses. Add unpredictable weather, and it gets even more interesting. But they are here. Answering phones. Restocking shelves. Turning on open signs. Taking care of customers. Taking care of this town.
That kind of steady does not make headlines. It just keeps everything moving.
Winter in a small town is not flashy. There are no parades right now. No carnival banners. The azaleas are not in bloom. It is just people going to work and doing what needs to be done.
And honestly, that might be the strongest look of all.
We are steady. We are open. We are already thinking about what comes next, even while we are finishing what still needs finishing.
The weather may be unable to make up its mind. We may be wearing coats in the morning and rolling down windows by afternoon. But no matter what is going on around us, we are still here.
