COFFEEVILLE – The Yalobusha County Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of a metal detector for use at the courtroom entrance at the Coffeeville courthouse. The approval for the expense was for an estimated price of $5,000 or slightly lower and passed unanimously during the “first Monday” meeting on March 2.
“We have one in Water Valley,” Chancery Clerk Donald Gray said about a metal detector that has been in use at the Water Valley courthouse for years.
“But we don’t have anything in Coffeeville. And there have been some pretty intense cases lately,” Donald Gray added.

Supervisors also approved a request from the Yalobusha County Election Commission regarding how poll workers are paid following elections.
Donald Gray told the board that election officials had asked whether poll workers could be paid immediately after an election. He said that is not possible under the county’s payment process for claims.
“They actually can’t be paid the day after an election,” Gray explained. “They brought this up because of the way we pay bills. We pay the first and mid-month.”
Gray recommended that the county process the payments for poll works during the next scheduled pay cycle after the election.
“We can pay a mid-month,” he said.
District Five Supervisor Gaylon Gray noted that the issue has come before the board previously.
“We’ve gone through this before,” he said.
Supervisor Eddie Harris made a motion to pay poll workers on either the first or the 15th of the month — whichever comes first.
The motion passed without objection.
