WATER VALLEY – The Hubert Creekmore Literary Society Reading Series will partner with Bozarts Gallery for an evening of spoken word and art by Mississippi author and sewist Exodus Oktavia Brownlow on April 7.
Writer and editor, sewist and fashion designer, Exodus Brownlow has emerged as a singular voice among Mississippi writers since graduating from Mississippi University for Women with an MFA in creative writing in 2018. A native of Blackhawk, Mississippi, she writes poetry, fiction and nonfiction and continues to win accolades for her work since her first reading in Water Valley two years ago, including a notable selection in Best American Essays 2024.
Brownlow will read from her debut fiction chapbook, Look at All the Little Hurts of These Newly Broken Lives, and The Bittersweet, Sweet and Bitter Loves, forthcoming from Screen Door Press in January, 2027. Act 1 of her four-act mixed-media and sewing collection, “Bitty the Butterfly,” also will be on display beginning April 7.
Bozarts Gallery is located at 403 N. Main Street. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Open mic begins at 6:45 p.m. (come ready to share your own work). The featured author begins at 7 p.m., followed by a Q&A.
