In 1966, Sheriff J.G. “Buster” Treloar was ready to move into the new county jail (left), vacating the jail on Blackmur Street, just south of the courthouse (left). Both jails now sit unoccupied with the completion of the new jail in 2015.
10 Years—April 14, 2016 – A partnership spanning more than 61 years is recognized at the annual Water Valley Chamber of Commerce banquet as Bob and Dale Tyler receive the Braswell Hatcher Service Award. Both lifelong Water Valley residents and graduates of Water Valley High School, the couple also earned degrees from the University of Mississippi before careers in education and coaching.
As is tradition, the award remains a surprise. Dale Tyler tells the audience she was convinced to attend after being told seats needed to be filled.
“I fell for it,” she says, noting she began to suspect something when she saw so many family members in attendance.
20 Years—April 13, 2006 – Even with inclement weather Yalobusha County Relay for Life raised $75,000. Pictured leading the survivors’ march were Pam Eubanks Taylor, Shirley Sims, Donna Hardy, Bonnie Dimock, Travis Clement, Snooky Williams, Maddie Hammond, Rev. Barry Dickerson and Jonnie Mayo.
Hail estimated half the size of a quarter fell in many parts of the county last Friday.
During recent Town and Country Garden Club meetings everything from litter to a downtown park pavilion was discussed. Hostesses for the meetings were Loy McMinn and Martha Edwards, Julia Taylor and Margaret Daum, and Patsy Humphreys.
30 Years—April 11, 1996 – Callie Cox, daughter of Dee and Bobby Cox was selected as Water Valley’s “Miss Hospitality” for 1996-97. She was crowned by Tina Hill, daughter of Toni and Tommy Hill, the outgoing “Miss Hospitality.” Mr. and Mrs. Chester Joyner celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a family celebration, hosted by their children.
David Wood won the Junior Beef Showmanship Competition at the Yalobusha County Beef Show. The Championship Heifer Award went to David’s Gelbvieh heifer, who also placed 5th in the Northwest District Beef Show at Batesville.
On Easter morning, First United Methodist Church, transformed an old rugged cross into a living floral exhibit—the Easter message. As members placed flowers, Fawn Keen provided music. Carolyn Carlisle and Nettie Nell Richmond, worship co-chairmen, headed the event.
40 Years–April 17, 1986 – Future Farmer of America Creed Speaker Gina Holley won first place in Federation and second place in the District Senior Division. Water Valley FFA Advisor is Rodney Childress.
The annual Poke Sallet Festival was set for Saturday, May 3, reported Sam Higdon, Chamber of Commerce Manager. Attorney General Edwin Pittman was scheduled to be the principal speaker at the annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet.
Winners in the Stars Night Talent Show were: 8-14, Shalanda Okesha Moore, Shawanda McCollins, and Tammy Burgess; 15-17, Marilyn Daniels, T. White, and Jackie Taliferro; and adult, Linda Carr.
50 Years—April 15, 1976 – In a clean up contest benefiting Water Valley, “Sissy” Redwine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Redwine, and Doug Carter, son of Mrs. Fred Carter, were members of the first place O’Tuckolofa team. This group picked up 92 bags of trash from county roads and city streets.
Dr. Porter Fortune was the speaker at the annual Rotary Banquet. Judge Kermit Cofer was toastmaster for the evening and Rev. Guy Reedy was president of the club.
Trent Howell was one of three Ole Miss law students initiated into Phi Delta Phi.
60 Years—April 14, 1966 – Pictured was the new $120,000 jail that would be put into use in the next few days, according to Sheriff J. G. “Buster” Treloar. The jail would house 24 prisoners. Also pictured was the old jail that was being vacated.
Oakland seniors were honored guests at a party in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Miller, following the Senior Class Play. Mrs. J. R. Criss was the class sponsor.
70 Years—April 12, 1956 – Water Valley High School Seniors and their chaperones enjoyed a trip to New Orleans. Taking the trip were: seniors, Ronnie Pass, Danny Wright, Mary Lucia George, Lila Rusk, Patsy McCulley, Dickey Tutor, Bill Harris, Don Edwards, Janice Taylor, Norma Bennett, Betty Ann Hill, Faye Poindexter, Mary Ellen Woods, Juanita Potts, Binnie Turnage, Paul Shearer, Patsy Mills, Shirley Sartain, Tommy Howard, Charles Goode, Russell Jones, Bennie Taylor, Dale Ashmore, Jimmy Baddley, and W. D. Pendergrass; and chaperones, Buster Beene, Ludie Appleton, Mrs. Hubert Edwards, and Mrs. W. W. Turnage.
