Neil White
WATER VALLEY – The Hubert Creekmore Literary Society Reading Series and The Magnolia Coffee Co. will present Oxford writer, editor and publisher Neil White on Tuesday, May 5, in The Drawing Room, 428 N. Main St.
Born in Gulfport, White has worked as a newspaper editor, advertising executive and magazine publisher for The Oxford Times, Coast Magazine and Louisiana Life. He is also known for his memoir, In the Sanctuary of Outcasts, published in 2009 by William Morrow, which chronicles his 18 months in a federal prison in Carville, Louisiana — a facility that also housed the nation’s last leper colony.
Following his release, White rebuilt his career, launching Nautilus Publishing in Oxford and continuing to write and speak about his experiences. He publishes Samir Husni’s Guide to New Magazines and has contributed essays to works including The Mission: Journalism, Ethics, and the World.
White is also the author of several plays, including Lepers & Cons, Symmetry and Clandestine. His additional work includes editing the anthology Ten-Minute Plays from Oxford and authoring the craft book Creating True Scenes that Read Like Fiction.
The Magnolia Coffee Co. will serve coffee, tea and wine by the glass beginning at 6:15 p.m., followed by an open mic at 6:45 p.m. The featured reading will begin at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a question-and-answer session.
There is no charge to attend, though donations are encouraged to support the Hubert Creekmore Reading Series. For more information, visit creekmorelit.com.
