Volunteers Invited For May 2 Cleanup

WATER VALLEY – The Water Valley Utilities Commission is hosting the inaugural “Rally for a Clean Water Valley” Litter Pick-Up Day on Saturday, May 2, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. It’s a chance for folks all over town to come together and help take care of the place we all call home.

Registration is from 7 to 8 a.m. in the parking area behind the Magnolia trees in Railroad Park on Main Street. Before anybody heads out, the Water Valley Lions Club will be serving a pancake breakfast to start the morning. Wristbands can be picked up at the cleanup registration table for presentation for the free breakfast. Private donors are funding the meal cost, as well as litter grabbers, safety vests, gloves and bags.

Volunteers will get everything needed to get started — safety vests, garbage bags and gloves — before heading out across town.

Local businesses and civic groups will be out there too, pitching in and helping cover a lot of ground. There may even be a little friendly competition mixed in, with prizes and awards being provided by local businesses and civic groups.

If you or your group would like to be part of a litter pick-up team, send a private message to the Water Valley Utilities Commission through their Facebook page with your contact information.

Participating businesses include BTC Old Fashioned Grocery, providing 10 percent off lunch Saturday with the wristband. Violet Valley is offering a free book (under $5). Any businesses that would like to offer additional incentives can contact Water Valley Utilities Commission Chairman Brandon Presley at (662) 401-3985.

It’s one of those mornings where a little effort goes a long way. A clean town, a good breakfast and neighbors working side by side. Hard to beat that.

The sanitation division of the utility commission will be running garbage trucks to dispose of the litter as it is picked up.
