20 Years—July 6, 2006– Suzanne Fischer, daughter of Sherry and Paul Fischer, has been selected as the 2006-’07 Miss Casey Jones.
Bud Adams, 14-year-old Yalobusha County native, won a first place prize in the pork division of the North Mississippi 4-H Club Cook-0ff Contest. Haley Smith of Tillatoba placed first in the Junior Prestigious Steak Contest. Other winners from Yalobusha County were Elizabeth Hurdle, Storm Laster and Presley Coleman.
The seven and eight year old Water Valley Softball All-Star Team competed in a tournament at Bruce. This was the first ever seven and eight year old team to compete in a tournament. Team members included Taylor Ann Trusty, Shay Shuffield, Katelyn Sanford, Madison Green, Ebony Hervey, Quanisha Morgan, Anna Katherine Burress, Allyson Avant, Keauna Farrow, Tierra Turner, Kacie Lee, Brianna Norwood and Elizabeth Stark. Coaching the team are Johnny Avant, Steve Burress, and Karon Stanford.
The Water Valley Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors hosted a ribbon cutting for Glenn and Betty Jones’ Fresh Produce last week.
Water Valley High School Cheerleaders Austin Mills, Meredith Burrell, and Steffi River were awarded spots on the 2006 All-Star Team, and will travel to London, England to cheer with the prestigious squad.
30 Years—July 11, 1996 – Jayne River, president of the Water Valley Junior Auxiliary, presented one of the new 1996 Watermelon Carnival t-shirts to Callie Cox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Cox, who is Water Valley’s 1996 “Miss Hospitality.”
The 1956 Chevrolet 4-Door Hardtop, bought new by the late Mrs. W. J. Tipler and now owned by Odie Shuffield, will be featured during he Watermelon Carnival Antique Car Display.
Nancy Margaret Ray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Ray, attended a National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine to be held in Houston and Galveston, Texas.
40 Years—July 10, 1986 – Roy C. Patton retired from the State Highway Department June 30. He was a highway inspector and worked our of the Water Valley Project Office.
Rotary Club’s outgoing president, Trent Howell, installed new officers: Rupert Kolb, president; Joe Davis, vice-president; Keith Mitchell, secretary-treasurer; and James B. (Sonny) Lollar, sergeant-at-arms.
Three Water Vallians were selected as members of the first place wining team in the seventh and eighth grade division of the Ole Miss Basketball Camp. They are Leigh Ann Vaughn; Jo Henderson; and Cheri Ann Carr.
50 Years—July 8, 1976 – Parade Marshal for the Water Valley Bicentennial Parade was Mayor Watson Hunt.
Riding his horse and wearing a patriot top hat, he displayed the official bicentennial ensign.
Mrs. Jennie Tolbert, who for many years was the assistant home economist for Yalobusha County, was a participant in bicentennial activities. Her husband was the late Rev. Tolbert, a district superintendent of the Holly Springs Upper Mississippi Conference.
The Water Valley School PTA is planning a production of “The Wizard of Oz”, with a cast of elementary and junior high students.
60 Years, July 7, 1966 – Toni Trusty, Katie Johnsey, and Libby Holder will serve as Junior Auxiliary aides in the story hour session at the City Library. Mrs. E. L. McVey will tell stories to children six to eight years old and refreshments will be served.
Water Valley Mayor L. C. Stewart, in a City Board meeting, suggested changing the name of Mudline Road to Airport Drive. The Board agreed and the matter was to be taken up with the Yalobusha County Board of Supervisors.
Twelve girls from Yalobusha County would be attending Mississippi State College in the fall. They are: Mary Sue Shaw and Virginia Sue Arrington of Coffeeville; Jane Carol Coleman of Enid; Margaret Freeman Crenshaw of Scobey; Beverly Ruth Allen, Paula Scarbrough, Patricia Lee Craven, Patricia Louise Jones, Martha Lee Pass, Patricia Louise Womble, Mary Lou Fortinberry and Alice Faye Humphries, all of Water Valley.
70 Years—July 5, 1956 – The Bank of Water Valley was being remodeled and a picture showing the bank as it appeared in 1940 was included with the story about the remodeling plans. Mr. Thad Trusty was president of the bank.
The Yalobusha County Home Demonstration Council, at a meeting in Water Valley hosted by the Oakland HD Club, elected Mrs. Wallace Helmke as a delegate to the National Council to be held in San Antonio, Texas. Mrs. W. W. Adams was selected as the alternate.
80–Years—July 11, 1946 – The boll weevil threat is serious over Yalobusha County and the State of Mississippi. Reported is that calcium arsenate is still the most effective poison.
