20 Years—September 14, 2006 – Cadet Larry Harris, son of Wayne and Cheryl Harris of Water Valley, has completed Cadet Basic Training at the U.S. Military Academy. A 2006 graduate of Water Valley High School, Cadet Harris was among 1,300 cadets completing the training and he plans to graduate from West Point in 2010, when he will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
Yalobusha General Hospital goes digital with radiology readings. Hospital Administrator Terry Varner was shown with the new piece of equipment, as x-ray technician, Dana Irvin demonstrated how the machine works.
Dr. George Armstrong of Coffeeville was presented a plaque during his retirement party for his many years of service to this area. Making the presentation was Yalobusha General Hospital Administrator Terry Varner.
Heading into Region 3-3A play, the Blue Devils suffered their first loss of the season to the Calhoun City Wildcats, by a score of 16-7.
30 Years—September 19, 1996 – Dr. Rayford Edgar was honored on his retirement as Executive Director of the Economic Development Arm of the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce. Presenting the plaque was Joe Black, president of the Chamber, and Binford Williams, president of the Economic Development group.
Stan’s Short Shots told that hunters had until Sunday to get in their dove hunting and that other hunting seasons would be opening soon.
The Sissell family had several generations of the family gathered for a reunion at John Kyle State Park. The family dates back to Bryan Whitfield and Martha Ferguson Sissell in the mid 1800s.
40 Years—September 21, 1986 – Delmas Burch, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Mississippi, assisted by Olin Gore, Jr., Past Grand Master of the local Masonic Bodies, and Donald Pool, Worshipful Master of Valley City Lodge, were in charge of the ceremony of laying the cornerstone of the new Masonic Temple.
The first bale of the ’86 season, which belongs to Larry Kimzey, weighed 517 pounds.
The Blue Devils defeated the Lafayette County Commodores Friday night by a score of 18-6.
50 Years—September 16, 1976 – Members of the Water Valley High School band’s rifle team pictured were Sheila McMinn, Karen McMillan, Donna Boland, Cindy Massey, Debbie Walker, Vivian Sanders, Ginny Carothers, and Paige Jones, captain.
The Junior High Blue Devils shut out the Charleston Tigers, 14-0. Players mentioned in the story were Richie Craven, Chuck Turner, Larry Willingham and Steve Edwards. The team was coached by Water Valley native Jim Thompson.
The High School Blue Devils fell to the Coldwater Cougars, 34-12 in the second game of the season. Leading the rushing game for the Devils was senior fullback, Tim Anderson. Coaching the team was Valley native, Dean Wright.
60 Years—September 15, 1966 – New officers of the Jaycees installed were: Bennie Cole Taylor, president; Frank Berle Brooks, vice president; Melvin Ford, secretary; Binford Turnage, treasurer; Charlie Holloway, director. Oscar Mackey was past president of the organization.
Taxes for most parts of Yalobusha County will be reduced this year, according to a report from the Board of Supervisors.
Claude Hardy, a member of Yalobusha County Saddle Club, placed eighth in the gaited class of the State Championship Horse Show. Attending the show, but not participating, were Dr. and Mrs. M. S. McMillan and their daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Childress, Jan and Rod, and Mr. and Mrs. Dalton Hyde.
Blu-Buck Merc. Co. was advertising a $2,500 give-away on Christmas eve. First prize was $500 cash, and additional prizes, valued at $2,000, in merchandise.
70 Years—September 20, 1956 – Page one and two of this issue are missing from the file.
The Bethlehem Home Demonstration Club booth took third place in the Tri-Lake fair. The exhibit showed all kinds of home canned fruits and vegetables. Fourth place winner was the Camp Ground Club, with needlework and lovely metal trays, some beautifully hand painted. (First and Second Place Winners were probably pictured on page one.)
The Garden Club of Water Valley was planning a garden center to display proper arrangement of flowers to best display their natural beauty. The committee for this project was Mrs. W. L. Ilkin, Mrs. W. W. Turnage, Mrs. Hubert Edwards, Mrs. Stanley Perkins, and Mrs. Herman White.
Catches reported in Kate Johnsey’s Fishing Column were: Rev. W. C. Howard, 6 crappie; Haze Brister and A. A. Gore, 17 crappie and 7 bass; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Johnsey, 9 crappie; Mr. and Mrs. Johnny McDonald, 22 crappie; and Frank Tucker, 9 crappie.
80 Years—September 19, 1946 – Mrs. Jessie Wagner sustained painful injuries when her car overturned near Clarksdale. She is presently in the Clarksdale hospital, but when able she will go to the home of her daughter, Edwin Wagner in Memphis until she is fully recovered.
