Law Enforcement Report

Staff Report

A runaway tire from an 18-wheeler rolled 75 yards across a yard striking a car and damaging a house, according to Sheriff Lance Humphreys.

The tire came from a truck travelling from Bruce down Hwy. 330 on Wednesday, Feb. 10.

“The tire rolled 75 yards before hitting the parked car and darn near ripped the fender off,” Humphreys said. The tire then bounced off the car and hit a house, damaging the roof of a porch.

Deputies filled out an accident report in the incident. The truck driver stopped and had even contacted his insurance company before law enforcement arrived on the scene, according to Humphreys.

Additional law enforcement activity reported by the sheriff in the last week includes:

• Deputies responded to a report of a malicious mischief that occurred between Feb. 9 and 10 on County Road 221.

“The vehicle owner reported a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe had been vandalized,” Humphreys reported. A sensor for a brake line and a spark plug wire had been cut. The case remains under investigation.

• Deputies made an arrest for DUI, first offense, on Feb. 13. The driver, who was stopped on County Road 221, was charged with DUI, driving with a suspended driver’s license and not having proof of insurance.

• Deputies took a report of animal cruelty on County Road 3 near Scobey on Feb. 13.

• Deputies made a misdemeanor arrest for false pretenses after a female cashed a fraudulent check. Humphreys reported the suspect had reported her payroll check missing from her Oakland employer and was issued a second check with the same check number.

The suspect then cashed the original check and the second check, one in Coffeeville and the second in Oakland.

“She was charged with false pretenses, a misdemeanor, as the check was less than $500,” Humphreys said. “She also lost her job.”

• Deputies responded to a domestic dispute after a man jumped out of a vehicle on Country Road 95. He apparently had just broken up with his girl friend when he jumped out of the moving vehicle near Hopewell Church.

“He was not seriously injured, he rolled into a ditch,” Humphreys told the Herald. The ex-girlfriend was driving the car at the time of the incident.

• Deputies worked a vehicle accident on Hwy. 315, north of Water Valley. The vehicle struck a deer.
