WATER VALLEY –Three-term Chancery Clerk incumbent Amy F. McMinn appears to have beat back a challenge by Donald Gray.

According to unofficial elections results Tuesday night, McMinn had a 45 vote lead with 2,264 votes. There were 62 affidavit ballots remaining to be counted at presstime Tuesday night.

In the hotly contested six-way race for sheriff, incumbent Lance Humphreys led the ticket with 36.2 percent of the votes cast, or 1,640 votes. Jamie Caldwell was second in the race with 30 percent of the vote, or 1,361 votes. Humphreys did not receive a majority of the votes, setting a rematch in the August 23 runoff with Caldwell.

Caldwell and Humphreys had a similar scenario four years ago, when they led a six-way ticket and faced off in a runoff. Humphreys defeated Caldwell in the runoff.

Luther Folson finished third place, just behind Caldwell with 1,230 votes. Columbus Buford Jr. polled 170 votes, Tommy Lindsey received 68 votes and William Beard earned 67 votes.

The winner of the August 23 runoff will face independent candidate Russ Smith in the Nov. 8 General Election.

In a tight four-way race for District Three Supervisor, Lee McMinn  narrowly led the ticket with 39 percent of the vote. McMinn will advance to the runoff with Kenny Goolsby, who finished second with 32 percent of the votes. McMinn had 374 votes compared to Goolsby’s 310 votes.

Bailey Walker finished third with 174 votes, followed by Henry Johnson with 104 votes.

In the county-wide three-way race for county prosecuting attorney, Gail Barton led the ticket with 1,780 votes, or just under 40 percent. David Burns finished second with 1,540 votes. Daniel Martin polled 1,147 votes. Barton and Burns will now advance to the runoff.
