WATER VALLEY – The final chapter in this year’s Democratic Primary will unfold in four county races on next Tuesday’s runoff election.
There are two county-wide races on the ballot, along with the contest for Beat Three Supervisor and District One Constable. Of the four races, only one has an incumbent seeking re-election. In a rematch from 2007, retired trooper and Water Valley Police officer Jamie Caldwell seeks to unseat Sheriff Lance Humphreys.
The pair faced off in a runoff four years ago, and Humphreys won with 59 percent of the vote. The winner of the runoff will face independent candidate Russ Smith in the November General Election.
In Beat Three, incumbent Supervisor M.H. Surrette did not seek re-election, setting up a four-way race to fill his seat. Lee McMinn narrowly led the ticket on August 2, with just under 39 percent of the vote. Kenneth Goolsby followed with 32 percent of the votes, setting up the runoff. A candidate must receive 50 percent of the vote, plus one, to win outright.
In the bid for District One Constable, Brent Anderson was the top vote-getter, with 44 percent of the vote in the hotly contested four-way race. He will face Marvin Horton in the runoff. Horton received 38 percent of the vote. The winner of the runoff will face independent candidate Stella Townes and Republican candidate Carl Park in the November election. Incumbent constable Charlie Calder passed away earlier this year.
In another county-wide race, David Burns and Gail Barton are competing in the runoff to see who will serve as county prosecuting attorney for the next four years. Barton captured the most votes in the three-way race, followed by Burns. Incumbent J.K. Ward did not seek re-election in this race.
Circuit Clerk Daryl Burney reminds voters that both courthouses will be open until noon Saturday for absentee voting. Burney also noted that voters are not allowed to switch parties in the runoff.
