Billy’s Creek Seeks Grant For New Well

COFFEEVILLE – Supervisors approved several documents as part of an application process to allow Billy’s Creek Water Association to apply for grant funds to construct a new well in the western portion of the water district.
North Central Planning Development District representative Johnny Shell updated county officials about the grant process  at the “first Monday” supervisor meeting held in Coffeeville May 7.
“The applications are very competitive, I want you to be aware of that up front,” Shell explained.
Shell also said Billy’s Creek has agreed to commit $25,000 matching funds if the Community Develop-ment Block Grant is awarded.
Billy’s Creek serves customers in northern areas of the county. In 2008 Billy’s Creek Water Association President Larry Sprouse said growth and weak pressure during peak water usage was creating a problem for the customers serviced in portions of the district.
In what started as a temporary agreement in 2008, Billy’s Creek Water Association inked a deal with the county to purchase water from the county-owned well servicing Windsor Foods.
Since that time the water association has had problems constructing the third well and has continued to purchase water from the county.
At the May 7 meeting, Sprouse thanked supervisors for their interest in the project.
“We feel very confident that if we can get this well,  it will secure that part of the water system,” Sprouse explained.
The new well would enhance fire project as well, according to Sprouse.
“With the marriage that we have now with the county, purchasing water is working great,” Sprouse added.
Sprouse said a new well could also serve as back up for Windsor Foods or the Town of Oakland if needed.
