Sheriff Seeks Tips In Sylva Rena Burglaries

SYLVA RENA – A burglary reported on Hwy. 32 west marks the third time in recent weeks thieves have struck in that neck of the woods.
Sheriff Lance Humphreys reported video games were the target in the theft, which occurred between August 3 and 6. Last month Sylva Rena Grocery and the Sylva Rena Community Center were also targeted. An air conditioner was reported missing at the community center.
“There is a strong possibility these cases are connected,” Humphreys told the Herald.
While the department has interviewed several people of interest, Humphreys is reaching out to the public for help with this case.
The sheriff urged anyone who has noticed suspicious activity or heard information about these crimes to contact the sheriff’s department or the Yalobusha County Crime Stoppers.
Humphreys said anyone with information can remain anonymous if they contact the Yalobusha County Crime Stoppers. The organization will pay up to $1,000 for information in this crime. If you have information contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-933-TIPS or 473-4935.
Tips can also be sent by email to: TIPS@ Yalobusha County.net. Crime Stoppers callers are never required to reveal their identity nor testify in court.
Other law enforcement activity includes:
• Deputies charged Chris Joey St. Romain with two counts of joyriding. Hump-hreys said the charges could be upgraded to a felony, depending on the amount of damages in the vehicle which was damaged in the incident.
• Deputies arrested Brad Sutherland of Courtland on August 4 for felony DUI. Sutherland also faces a long list of charges in connection with the arrest, including failure to yield to blue lights, no proof of insurance, improper passing, reckless driving and driving on the wrong side of the road.
• Deputies charged Don Cam Plyer of Louisiana and Blanco Scoggin with manufacture of methamphetamine.
The arrests were made on County Road 117 after his department received a tip of a possible meth lab.
Humphreys said he obtained a search warrant for the residence after deputies initially visited the home to perform a “knock and talk.”
Knock and talk is police legalese which means visit the residence and talk to the occupants.
“There was a very strong smell of chemicals during the first visit, which allowed us to get a judge to sign off on the search warrant,” the sheriff explained.
Numerous ingredients used to manufacture methamphetamine were seized during execution of the warrant including coffee filters with meth residue. Additional people could also face charges in connection with the alleged meth production.
Plyer, a convicted sex offender, was also wanted out of Louisiana for probation violation.
• Deputies took a report of simple assault on County Road 4 on August 4. Charges have been filed.
• Deputies took a report of petty larceny on County Road 114 on August 1.
