Holiday Season Has Kicked Off

WATER VALLEY – Fall has finally arrived and the holiday season is officially underway in the Valley following last Saturday’s Holiday Open House as merchants across town opened their doors for the city’s pre-Christmas shopping days.

Sponsored by the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, many happy folks (see winners, Page 14) walked away with some fabulous gifts on open house, donated by local merchants, and others enjoyed getting a jump on their Christmas shopping with the great merchandise offered at local businesses. Lucky winner Sandra Quinn took home the chamber’s grand prize, a brand-new leather recliner, purchased from Magnolia Home Furnishings.

The Rotary Club’s Chili Cook-off last Saturday has become a favorite fall activity.  There were 21 entries this year, so there was plenty of good eating going on in the Pocket Park.  One hundred bowls of chili were sold and Ab and Ben McCullough were first place winners, receiving a $100 check. Billy Childs won second place and Jeanette Whitehead captured third place.

The open house is just the beginning, even more holiday opportunities remain for you and your family. The chamber’s annual “Christmas in the Valley” event will be held on Friday evening, December 2, from 5 to 8 p.m., with horse-drawn carriage Rides for the whole family!  Tickets are $3 per person and may be purchased that night in front of the chamber office.

Merchants will remain open later during “Christmas in the Valley” for your shopping convenience.  There will be live musical entertainment on the bandstand and Christmas music playing as you shop.  Everybody’s holiday friend, “Frosty,” is expected to make his appearance that night, so be sure to bring your cameras!  Other clubs and organizations are encouraged to participate in “Christmas in the Valley.”  Children’s holiday activities, games, or art workstations, etc., would be welcome.

Water Valley’s much-anticipated annual Christmas parade will commence at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 3,, starting at the First Baptist Church, and proceeding southward, down Main Street.  All of the children will be looking to see if Santa makes it again this year! Thirteen floats are already registered for the parade and many more are expected as the annual event is always a huge success. Contact J.C. Womble at 473-3190, or at jcwomble53@yahoo.com if you are interested in participating in this year’s Christmas parade.

Leigh Rounsaville will be taking pictures with Santa on parade day again this year on the Bandstand, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m..

Also, on December 3rd, the Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the annual Christmas tour of homes from 4 to 7 p.m.  Homes on this year’s tour are owned by Sarah Nell Trusty Champion, Gil and Jerri Anne Davis, Yvonne Vance, and Richard and Karen Waring.  Refreshments will be served at all of these beautifully-decorated homes.

Tour of Homes “tickets” will actually be wristbands to be presented at each home to gain entrance.  They are $10 each and include all four homes.  They may be purchased at the chamber office for one week prior to the event, during regular chamber hours, starting on Monday, Nov 28th.

Wristbands will also be available at the chamber office during the Christmas parade on December 3, and again from 3 to 6 p.m.  Wristband “tickets” will NOT be available for purchase at any of the homes, and no one will be allowed entrance into the homes prior to 4 p.m.
