Work by Oxford artist Nancy Mitchell is on display at Renasant Bank on Central Street. Almost a dozen pieces hang in the bank’s lobby as the latest installment of a series of rotating shows sponsored by the bank and Water Valley Arts Council.
Mitchell is a multimedia artist who gravitates toward watercolor and contemporary realism. She reports that teaching high school for three decades allowed her to experiment with materials she would not otherwise use.
“Although I was ‘teacher,’ the students and I traveled together, learning from one another. Creating art helps me feel invigorated and complete,” the artist explained. Her desire is to share how she sees the world, and she gravitates toward everyday objects or scenes with strong shadows and high contrast.
She also leads “More Than A Painting” art classes for non-artists.
“I believe anyone can learn to draw and be creative,” Mitchell explains. Each three-hour class is based on a painting by a famous artist. Students receive information on the artist and learn about composition and color mixing. The students leave with a finished art piece to hang in their home at the end of the class.
