SYLVA RENA – For more than a year planning has been underway at Sylva Rena Baptist Church to launch an annual “Thanksgiving for the Blessing of the Hunt.” Scheduled for the first Saturday in February, which is just over a month before turkey season starts. The action will run from 3 to 5 p.m. on Feb. 4 and includes a wild game supper and fellowship, a discussion on turkey hunting and conservation with Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks wildlife biologist Alec Conrad. The event will be held at the church’s Family Activi-ties Center, located at 17640 Hwy. 32, west of Water Valley.
As event co-coordinator, William Brady has worked tirelessly to plan the afternoon, rounding up some great door prizes that include gift certificates and merchandise from several restaurants, Home Depot, Lakeway Archery, Bass Pro Shops, Chick-fil-A and many others. One lucky winner will also walk away with the grand door prize, a Mossberg 500 pump shotgun for ages 18 and over and a fishing gear rig for ages 17 and under.
Rusty Robertson of Batesville will bring the message and as an avid outdoorsman he will share his experience while in the woods enjoying God’s creation. Delta Christian, a Christian book and gift store will have a booth set up at the event.
Admission is free and you don’t have to bring food but you are welcome to bring your favorite wild or tame game dish.
“We are hoping to get some unusual dishes like rabbit, coon or possum,” Sylva Rena Pastor Shane Crawford added. “We want this to be a family-oriented event, for hunters to bring your spouse and kids. And If you are not a hunter, come on anyway the food and fellowship will be great,” Crawford added.
