WATER VALLEY – Affectionately known as “Nallie’s” to their customers, local restaurant owners Don and Nallie Terry received the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce Business Spotlight Award on Feb. 9. Next month the restaurant officially called Nallie’s Eggroll Place will mark 25 years of serving Nallie’s special Thai foods, egg rolls, and noodle and rice plates from her native country, as well as many other tasty food choices. They also offer fish, chicken, shrimp, country fried steak, barbeque, soup and salads, sandwiches, and more.
Their devotion to this successful business began years ago when Don moved to Australia, working for Lanham Machinery. He traveled everywhere and met his future wife in Thailand in 1987. They married in May of 1988 and were living in New Zealand when they decided to come to America, and Don’s home town, that December.
“I gave her the choice of Atlanta or Water Valley,” Don explained, “and she chose Water Valley.” Nallie added, “I like small towns….no big city for me!”
Nallie first worked at Big Yank for two and a half years, but she dreamed of opening a restaurant like the one she had in Thailand; so Don built her one on a trailer, and they opened for business on March 20, 1992.
“To my surprise, it did very well,” Don said.
They operated the fast-growing restaurant in the trailer for about a year and a half and then built a new building behind it, moving into the new and present structure on May 12, 1994.
“And, yes, 25 years (later), and we are still here!” Don said proudly. Their faithful customers couldn’t be more pleased.
The Terrys are exemplary and long-time Chamber members, always the first to arrive at the chamber office to pay their annual dues. They are interested in supporting their town and local businesses, and they provide superior customer service and restaurant selections.
With Don at the window taking orders and serving their customers, Nallie stays busy cooking and preparing those favorite dishes everyone craves. Always friendly and smiling, she likes to wave and speak to those she sees at the window each day. In her native language, a polite greeting like “Hello” is “Sawadee,” painted on their sign out front.
“As president of the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, I have the pleasure of announcing that the Board of Directors selected Nallie’s as the recipient of the Business Spotlight Award,” Toni Hill told the couple during the award presentation on Feb. 9.
“Running a small business often comes with its own set of challenges, and overcoming those hurdles takes hard work and dedication. But when the job is done, it’s also something to be proud of. We are happy to have you as members of the chamber, and we hope to see your success continue,” Hill added. She also noted the Chamber’s excitement for the quarter-century milestone for the business.
“It is our pleasure to honor Don and Nallie Terry with the Business Spotlight Award and a framed certificate from the local Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors,” Linda White, chairman of the event, added. “We are also pleased to highlight their 25th anniversary date as successful Water Valley business owners and celebrate this special time with them.”
