Deadline Looms To Qualify For City Offices

WATER VALLEY – The deadline to run for municipal offices is just over a week away and only one new candidate has emerged this month in Water Valley.

Freddie Thomas Folson qualified to run for Ward 2 alderman and will face incumbent Fred White. Other candidates qualifying in January in Water Valley include Herbert Rogers for Mayor, Donald Gray and Amos Hervey for Alderman-at-Large, Kagan Coughlin and Bobby J. Cox for Ward 1 Alderman, Phillip Tallant and Cinnamon Caryl Foster for Ward 3 Alderman and Larry Bell for Ward 4 alderman. All of the candidates are running on the Democratic ticket except Bell, who is running as an independent.

In Coffeeville, the list of candidates qualifying include Mack Burns for Mayor, Eva L. Longstreet for Ward 1 Alderman, George Miller for Ward 2 alderman and Michael Ayers for Ward 4 Alder-man.

In Oakland, the list of candidates include James Swearengen for Mayor, and George Booker, Terry Ellis, Sharonda Jones, Marzet Bland and Joe Willie Jenkins for aldermen. Aldermen run as independent candidates in Oakland, and the top five vote getters are elected.

Candidates must qualify by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 3 to run for municipal office.  Tuesday, May 2 is Primary Election Day and the Primary Runoff Day is Tuesday, May 16. The General Election is scheduled June 6.
