Deputies Make Three Drug Arrests During Weekend Patrols

WATER VALLEY – Deputies made three drug arrests over the weekend including one that came after a struggle. Sheriff Lance Humphreys reported Demoris Short of Charleston was taken into custody Saturday night following a traffic stop on Hwy. 32, west of Oakland near the Yalobusha-Tallahatchie county line. Humphreys said multiple deputies made the arrest including narcotics investigator Thomas West and  Jason Mangrum, Taylor Byford and Mike Lovelace, Sr.

Short is charged with improper equipment, driving with a suspended license, resisting arrest, two counts of assault on a police officer and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute – 500 grams or more but less than one kilo.

“They had a pretty violent struggle before Short was detained, a couple of the guys were banged up,” Humphreys said about the arrest. He also said that after the initial struggle, Short fled from officers on foot with the marijuana before he was finally restrained. He is currently in custody in the Yalobusha County Deten-tion Center with a $15,000 bond. 

In a separate incident Amber Taylor and Britney Cox were arrested Sunday morning at 12:41 a.m. after deputies responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle on Hwy. 51. The pair were taken into custody during a traffic stop. Taylor, of Grenada, and Cox of Ackerman, were both charged with possession of Schedule II and IV controlled substance (Hydrocodone and Klonopin).
