Legendary Guitarist Bill Kirchen Is Coming To Water Valley

Bill Kirchen

Legendary Commander Cody guitarist Bill Kirchen will bring his rockin’ Austin trio to Water Valley’s Old School Theater for a special Honky-Tonk Holiday concert on Sunday, December 17, at 7 p.m.

Currently residing in Austin, Texas, Kirchen, who most will remember for his many years as the twangin’ guitar player for country rock legends Commander Cody & The Lost Planet Airmen, will bring his Texas trio to the Old School Theater as part of his Honky-Tonk Holiday Tour and this show is guaranteed to be too much fun.

Grammy nominated guitarist, singer and songwriter Kirchen is one of the fortunate few who can step on any stage, play those trademark licks which drove the seminal Commander Cody classic “Hot Rod Lincoln” into the Top Ten nationwide, and elicited instant recognition. Named a “Titan of the Telecaster” by Guitar Player Magazine, his signature sound has been dubbed “dieselbilly” and incorporates elements of country music, blues, rockabilly, Western swing and boogie-woogie, laced with themes of American truck driving music.

Nick Lowe describes Bill as “… a devastating culmination of the elegant and funky…a really sensational musician, with enormous depth.

In addition to his many years touring the world with Commander Cody, Kirchen has released 11 solo albums including a collection of holiday songs called Bill Kirchen’s Honky Tonk Holiday. He’ll be playing songs from this album as well as all his regular concert classics for this Water Valley appearance.

“Bill Kirchen rules. It’s just that simple” says The Austin American Statesman and Johnny Cash once said, “I think he’s great … You should hear him on the new [Nick Lowe] album.”

Showtime is 7 p.m. and the doors open at 6:30. There will be a short opening set by local Christmas music fanatics Kevin Guyer & Kerry O’Donoghue, with some help from Casey Lipe, Mark Yacovone and Lisa Harrison performing under the name 34th Street. The show is general admission, tickets are $20. Tickets can be purchased at the door on the day of the show with cash or with a credit card online at
