Oxford Chargers head basketball coach Drew Tyler was honored for his 500th win during the Chargers’ home game Tuesday, Jan. 9, against Coffeeville.

The honor came after Coach Tyler’s Chargers defeated Tupelo the Friday before, an outstanding accomplishment as Tyler notched his 500th win as head coach of the Chargers.

Tyler has been the head coach for 21 seasons, coaching 205 players and winning 12 regional championships. Tyler’s Chargers have also been a seven-time state final four contender, a three-time north state runner-up, a four-time state elite eight finisher and a two-time state final four contender.

Tyler’s 1999 team finished as State Runner-ups and the 2001 Charger team was crowned State Champions. Coach Tyler and the Charger basketball team have made 19 straight state playoff appearances and have had 16 seasons with more than 20 wins, four of which were 30-win seasons in the last 21 years. Also in the past 21 years 54 Charger basketball players have signed athletic scholarships. Most importantly, all 101 seniors playing under Coach Tyler’s guidance have graduated from high school.

Coach Tyler was presented the game ball from the Tupelo victory marking 500 wins signed by his current team. He also was presented another ball signed by past players and a plaque.

An interesting note was that Coffeeville was the first win Coach Tyler had as head coach of the Chargers some 21  years ago and he marked up 501 with the win over Coffeeville after the presentations. Coach Tyler is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Tyler of Water Valley.
