WATER VALLEY – More than a dozen firefighters from multiple departments in the county battled a large fire for several hours last Thursday afternoon on Hwy. 315, just east of Water Valley. The fire started as a controlled burn before spreading and consuming an unoccupied house and several outbuildings including an old potato house on property owned by Tony Hardy.

Hardy sustained first and second degree burns to his arm after battling the blaze before firefighters from Velma, OTuckalofa, Pine Valley and the City of Water Valley responded around 3 p.m. He was transported from the scene to Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi for treatment.

Firefighters were able to establish a perimeter  around the blaze, which was fueled by strong wind gusts and threatened several additional structures in the vicinity.

Water Valley Fire Chief Sherman Gooch reported it was the largest fire his department had responded to since late December.
