Two Panola Men Charged In Burglary

Charles Bright and Dakota Melton

WATER VALLEY – A pair of Panola County men are behind bars after allegedly stealing five guns from a residence on County Road 231 in northwestern Yalobusha County. Yalobusha County Sheriff Lance Humphreys reported Dakota Melton, 18, of Sardis and Charles Bright, 18, of Courtland are each charged with burglary and grand larceny.

The sheriff reported the men were arrested in Panola County in an unrelated incident and provided information to investigators in the neighboring county that led to the arrest and recovery of the guns.

“We picked them up from the Panola County jail last Monday afternoon and charged them,” Humphreys said. “I would like to thank the Panola County Sheriff’s Department for their work on this case.”

Humphreys also reported random residential break-ins in the county are a recurring problem and provided tips to help protect your home and property.

“The most important thing you can do is keep a watch in your community and on your neighbor’s homes and if you see anything suspicious, report it to authorities,” the sheriff advised. “If you see something, say something. We will be happy to send a deputy out to check on things.”

Other tips provided by the sheriff include:

• Be sure to lock your doors.

• Have adequate lighting outside your residence.

• Record the serial numbers of your valuables.

• Get to know your neighbors.

• Do not leave valuables in your vehicle and keep it locked.
