Washington Is 2018 Star Student

Carlye Washington was named Star Student last month. She selected Angie Hodge as her STAR teacher.

JACKSON – Carlye Washington was named 2018 STAR Student for Water Valley High School in a ceremony on April 12 in Jackson. STAR stands for Student Teacher Achievement Recognition. In order to receive this honor, high school seniors must have at least a 25 on their ACT and a cumulative grade average of at least 93.

The STAR Student is also asked to designate his or her STAR Teacher. The STAR teacher should be one of his or her elementary or secondary classroom teachers (active, former, or retired). The teacher selected is, in the STAR Student’s opinion, the person who has made the greatest contribution to the student’s scholastic achievement. Carlye chose Angie Hodge, who taught her in 8th Grade Honors Algebra 1 and ACT Prep, as her STAR teacher.

This year, 330 STAR Students and their STAR Teachers were recognized from MEC’s Swayze Foundation at the 2018 Education Celebration. Each STAR student received a medallion, lapel pin and certificate in recognition of their achievements.

Carlye is the daughter of Cayce and Michelle Washington and will graduate as Class Valedictorian on May 18. After graduation, she plans to attend the University of Mississippi as a Provost Scholar where she will major in Business and Accounting. Her future plans are to return to Water Valley to join her parents in their business ventures.
